This is good advice, although I can't seem to be able to tell any difference when I have named a building...... like the way you can tell the difference when you have renamed a person.
I think it would indeed be mass confusion if this (renaming) isn't done before the amnesia. How would you be able to tell the difference between your building and someone else's unless you have the key? And many buildings don't have locks. Most buildings do not have enough in them to be able to tell the difference between one or the other.

On the contrary, I would say that that was moe natural. Just like a street map... just like the many non-visual maps in Cantr. And unlike with people, a "roadmap" list would be okay, as buildings don't go anywhere.
But someone could add a new building. The way it looks now, it would go into the list alphabetically according to the name it was given, even if amnesia prevented you from actually seeing the name. Don't know if it will or it won't...depends on how they code this "amnesia" business.
So take Drojf. Someone makes a new building called "AAA Clothing". All names would shift down one. Town Fathers frantically drop new "town map." Newpawn thief promptly steals it. Older person drops dead, leaves old town map on ground. Town Fathers don't notice. All subsequent newspawns then name all the buildings wrong. On finding out, they promptly leave the game and write crap reviews on mpogd, etc...
Hence my comment about all the poor sodding new owners having to name all new buildings Z1, Z2, etc. But above all, it points to the need for street addresses.
No amnesia before street addresses!

That shouldn't be a game mechanic, that should be an in game organisational issue.
Town planner, anyone?

There has to be some way of differentiating one 'stone building' from another 'stone building' just by sight - signs would do, but they'd have to have some kind of unchangeability - because if there's accidental amnesia as before, and no way of recording which building is which via some kind of street setup - it'll screw things up big time...

Mapping will have to be reinvented when roadmap comes, anyway.
And standard static location names will also be pointless, so we mine as well take a small step now!
"when roadmap comes"...I don't honestly expect that in the next few months, at least. Do you? I figure that's going to be an extremely long time coming...
But I do think that some way of following a map is needed. Though come to think, we already have it for most maps...just cound roads. Not exactly a tidy solution though.
Still, I favor an amnesia. I can take a little chaos for a better game system.

No.
One of my characters stole a boat and the (former) owner will have a very difficult job to find it back if she doesn't recognise it anymore. It would help my character, but it would be ridiculous.
Another character built two buildings, went for a walk. When she returns she has to ask which buildings she had?

oooh, new thingy. me likes.
I think amnesia, definately. We worked it out once before, we'll do it again.
However, we ought to have the name plates before we wipe the slate clean.
Also, for defaults. I think default place names should be the location type (grassland, mountain, etc), for roads the direction they go (unfortunately different at each end, but can we find a workaround for that?), and for buildings the type (stone building, stone hall, etc)

Say NO!
Why does cantr not allow the deletion of notes? Because it preserves the culture through notes. How will you preserve existing structures and knowledges? You're ruining history and the TONS of hours of map work players have done! With new islands (or new characters who don't know), sure, do what you want. But current places have current values and current perceptions, that should not be changed!
