Oh, the year was seventeen seventy six,
(How I wish I was in Sherbrook now!)
A letter of marque from the king,
to the scumiest vessel I've ever seen,

(Godamn them all!)

I was told to cruise the seas,
for American gold,
we'd fire no guns, shed no tears,
for I'm a broken man on a Halifax peer,
the last of Berret's privateers.

Thank you everyone for your responses.

Some players from an Irish folk band happened to stop in the pub I was at last night and sang Barret's Privateers. It was the first time I'd ever heard it. I just think it's funny how the day after I first hear a song I start seeing it all over... :)

Schme seems to have some sort of forum schizophenia...every once in a while something comes out that hasn't got a thing to do with the thread, or anything else.

Or am I the only one who can't understand some of his other posts...like "ten dollars"

Acutually, I assumed he was talking about the recent news article I read that a couple American companies were suing to not be held liable for their web content that was protected by American free speech, but that other countries' citizens could see and find objectionable.

International power aside...there's no liability to the American companies that I can see. They don't present the 'offensive' data (whatever it might be) in any other country, assuming their servers are here. To be offended, whoever's complaining has to go through a connector in their own country and ask for it to be sent to them from a computer which, on the US soil it inhabits, can't be breaking any law by providing said information.

The one that this less-liberal country can legitimately complain about is whoever is operating on their ground and re-transmitting this unacceptable material (by request only) to their unfortunate citizens.

(the above from someone who neither knows the situation beyond this thread nor is any form of expert on international law)

The word is, I believe, "bump".

Secondly, the internet was designed as sort of a free-speech zone, and you'll find that many webservers (including this one, probably) are based in the US and therefore, if someone decides to press the matter to the limits of current judicial exploration, probably subject to freedom of speech.

More to the point, there are no laws on the internet prohibiting what one can or cannot say (barring, of course, some sorts of copyright infringement, and occasionally libel). There is only custom and courtesy and rules of individual web communities, which they can kick you out for breaking.

Oh, and @ schme:

Americans invented the internet. Cool Americans. Not the ones that engage in elective warfare, but the kind that plays computer games and exports things of awesome to the world at large.

Ummm, sorry to let you down here but the internet was first created for the American military.

True.

Also, there are no laws against saying things on the internet, however, there are property laws. You cannot use someones property in a way that they do not want you too (legally). Be that using it to communicate your opnion or otherwise.

No. It was part of something that I am doing, and I thought it only fair to tell you.

And might I add that the word "RANDOM" is misuesed and grossly overused.

That is odd.

I'm surprised that Irish bands be singing Nova Scotian songs. I've heard it the other way around, but never that.

Small world, eh?
