Sigh. Here we go again.

To explain myself: On a message board for another game I once played, an argument about the American Civil War or the "War of Northern Agression", as it was also called on the topic. It was filled with insults (both to the historical figures and the participants) and flames. The argument raged on for 14 pages, with no sign of stopping.

Of course, I'm sure everyone on this forum will be much more civil and sensible, but still...

So let me start fanning the flames.

The north unconsitutionally forced the south to remain in the union.
The north took on the freedom of slaves thing only as a public relations thing to get a symptanhy vote from the whole north and the europeans.
That freedom is a good thing but really they just wanted to force the contry to stick together which also is a good thing.
It was just not based on any kind of law.
It was a war of the value of one country and added the value of freedom for all but it was still illegal.

I don't think Richard was asking about opinions on the Civil War. He wanted to know if there was anyone here knowledgable in its history. I think he wants to talk about things that happened, not whether they should or shouldn't have happened.

I'm not really a buff, but with all the history I read up on it's hard not to know a bit about it.

depends what history you read up about. I watch a lot of history programs, but know next to nothing about the American Civil War, so little I get it easily mixed up with the war of independance, which I know equally little about.

The country didn't grow much in the 75 years between those two.

I forget all the battles of the civil war.

I know that a wooden flating bridge (I forget what the name of that is) was made here to march union armies down.

Back in VA as the college of William and Mary I belive sometimes when it rained cannon balls would work there way up to the surface. I can't remember if those were colonial or civil war cannon balls.

There was some colinoal homes where you could see the patches of brick that were replaced to fill up the holes made by cannons.

But the details all escape me now. Every single battle of both those wars were required for tests.

The civil war is still the war in which most americans lost there lives, right?. The tech level was so equal on both sides. The south lost due to lack of key resoruces, blockaids and that the northern war factories were never touched.

Well, actually, the Louisiana Purchase (which occurred between the two wars) doubled the size of the nation, so I think that is significant growth.

I'm a Yankee. Notice that I'm from New York who turned out more men for war against those rebel states who betrayed the Union.

Lincoln betrayed the Union by destroying the Constitution and throwing out the Declaration of Independence.

I was once a Yankee sympathizer and Lincoln was one of my favorite presidents until I learned the truth behind the war.

It ended up not freeing the slaves, yet it released them from private bondage, but began the process of making us all slaves.

Of course the Constitution was flawed from the start by allowing slavery in the first place. That was one of the great compromises. It was a very unfortunate one.
