In character, no, not appropriate as the characters should have no knowledge of the players lazy/busy moments and should not react in tune to that detail.
As a player, it would be okay to wonder. I have had varying degrees of life consuming busywork overtake me quite regularly this last year and a half. As a player, there were many times that I could not bring myself to read over a massive amount of text. (anyone in a busy town who doesn't get the chance to log in for a day or two will know how that is)
The way I looked at it was, do I as a player want to spend the one hour free I had to read over all the events from all the characters, or did I want to hop in and give them some life? Me, I wanted to be a part of the action, not read about it. For the most part, it was okay, except for the dramallamas who went insane with their bleating.
