This makes me so sad. Even as a visitor I try to engage newspawns... and they have been -everywhere- lately as a visitor and in one town one of mine lives but despite attempts to engage it's pretty much been a stonewall back.

I have people in my town that don't seem to fit in, but I never ignore them. It's true, after the first few days, I stop going out of my way to involve them, but I think ultimately, the character needs to involve themselves, and if that means staying around and making their own group of friends because they never break into the established group, that's good. If we're all in the same happy family, there's never going to be any conflict. It would be really interesting for a town leader to die, and a discussion actually need to be required over who to replace them. Group A's person or Group B's person? That's one of the good things Zuzi had going for it and why it's probably such a drama magnet: It's home to the Order and the regular townies, and often they don't see eye to eye on things. It's two universes existing in the same space, and that causes problems, for the better (for the game).

Doug, I was in agreement until you mentioned Zuzi. That town really just needs a nuke. If I had any doubts before, they've been squashed thoroughly by recent events.

I tend not to go towards populated areas because of this. If they aren't going to fit in why bother being in a town they will be ignored in anyhow? Just..go be by yourself, because its the same concept. I have several "invisible" pariahs.

I have no issue with conflicting groups coexisting, peacefully or not so peacefully. Conflict is the only thing that can drive the game forward, even if that means that the players who like their immortal tea parties are going to be dragged, kicking and screaming, into history. It's ultimately for the better of the game.

What I have a huge problem with is those places that neglect newspawns not physically but culturally. I'm talking about places that have next to no possibility for a newcomer to reasonably enter into their society. It's really bizarre. Most towns will absolutely provide free sustenance to newspawns who stay awake and working, because hey, cheap indefinite labor, why not? I understand not every town is going to be the most welcoming to outsiders, but shouldn't we expect such societies to advertise themselves as such, rather than pretend to be inviting? Which to me would be absolutely fine; there should absolutely be groups that are suspicious and unwelcoming of strangers. I just find it strange and disappointing that most towns that are like this, that really would honestly just not give a damn if that newspawn starves to death within the first few years, still feel the need to pretend like they care. It's counterproductive to lie. I'd much, much, much prefer if they'd just say, "Hey, this road over there probably leads to more welcoming towns that might give two shits about you, here take a bit of food so you have a fighting chance of not starving to death, good luck and frankly, good riddance. Sorry you were born here."

Ok, griping about the weather. My character finally gets free time with the fella after decades of no free time, and what is it? Winter! Only cot is on deck. *sighs* Weather certainly adds flavor to the game. Sometimes that flavor doesn't taste so good. I guess you have to take the good with the bad...and start planning your vacations around the seasons, just like RL people.

One of my towns has a sign posted explaining that newspawns are not welcome to stay.

It's very diplomatically worded!

The length of seasons. Once you've equipped a couple of folks for the daily blizzards, three if you're lucky...pam, it's sunny again.

I seem to be stuck in a case of perpetual winter: Winter is the only time I really notice the weather. I've worked through the other seasons!

Demand a couple of weeks of summer holidays, sun is good for the bones!

Maybe the sudden changes will improve the clothes' trading? I know of a couple that would gladly trade their coats for bikinis and vice versa. But trying to keep the people in town warm enough or fresh enough is frustrating some times. I'm thinking about just investing in blankets and water balloons.

Don't you hate it when you do something a little unique with one of your characcters to sort of set them off make them stand out then with your other characters you start to see people doing it in other towns? Cantr plagiarism. Lol

I have to say I'm guilty of that one. Early on in my Cantr days, I encountered a very talented mute, and I did decide to start a mute as well. (Not that mutes are exceptionally unique.) I play him very differently than the other mute was played, but I admit I did it because I enjoyed Sandy.

Oh, this makes me oh so very curious. I know for sure I know of some examples of what you're talking about, but I'm very interested to know what unique trait you had in mind. :)
