Hmm, how about something like attacking only, "You focus on X today." this would be the only way to overhear someone, but there'd only be a a 2% chance you'd hear them whisper. On the other hand there'd be a 4-5% chance someone at the location would notice you, and then a 5% chance per person after that...? So it'd be like... a .25 percent chance per person that someone notices you 'focusing' and since the 5% cap no matter how large the place was it'd only ever be a 5% chance anyone would notice.

If the majority of whispers would go undetected instead of some insignificant number like 5%, that would help the flood, but the numbers should then be tweaked so that whispers were still likely to be spotted by at least one person, since it would be unnatural that no one was around to hear it.
The thing is, of course it would be the best if people could choose to ignore certain conversationalists while still keeping an eye on for example a couple of visitors that might be pirates, instead of it being hear everything or nothing at all, but anything that involves customization is going to require adding something to the database, and maybe even adding a whole new page since currently there are no character specific settings, only player specific.
Ryaga, the projects thing would accomplish the same with a natural chance of detection that fully depends on the awareness of the players rather than random chance.

I don't know Seko, don't take this as offensive, but that honestly seems a bit sloppy to me, gameplay wise. All you have to do to avoid being heard is exiting your project, whispering, and then hopping back on. It's rather counter-intuitive. You'd just have players going through a slight pain to avoid the mechanic instead of making it something neat. Plus, development wise I can't see doing the 'You focus on X' being hard. You'd need to store another datafield or whatever for who everyone is whispering to, then when a whisper occurs loop through the players and if anyone is listening to them, or the reciever you display it to them.SekoETC wrote:If the majority of whispers would go undetected instead of some insignificant number like 5%, that would help the flood, but the numbers should then be tweaked so that whispers were still likely to be spotted by at least one person, since it would be unnatural that no one was around to hear it.

That's if the person bothered to check the project info page for potential eavesdroppers. It would be more likely for them to assume that no one was going to eavesdrop on them anyway (unless they were a paranoid person) so they wouldn't bother. If they did notice that someone had joined without asking if they needed any help, then of course by all means they could start dropping the project every time they have to whisper but even if they did that, if they didn't drag off the listener or alert the person they were talking to, that other person's messages could still be detected by the listener.

Like me, I often check if my characters aren't being dragged by someone. Especially if people are whispering. D:

I just think it's awkward, honestly. I think it'd be much better to use randomness, or implement a new skill or something.SekoETC wrote:If you're working on the same project with friends, you either step aside to talk to someone in private or don't mind if those friends overhear what you're saying.

If you use it to be random it interferes with roleplaying as then it doesn't matter if you rp *they walk behind a building away from the others*

I suggested something to remove it from being completely random.Arenti wrote:Ryaga wrote:I just think it's awkward, honestly. Another couple days pass with the new overhearing possibility (even though it's so very low now) and I'm personally liking it more and more. It really adds to the game. I find myself checking event logs with much more excitement, knowing there's a chance I might overhear stuff I was never supposed to. And it's not just that. I find that it strangely adds a new depth to the personality of the characters you overhear, like a glimpse of their hidden self. Very interesting sensation, that.
In one town, I saw a series of events where someone else's character overheard something and brought it up, only to be chastized by everyone else for butting into something that isn't their business. That has never happened before! Fantastic!
Never once has it been anything about sex scenes, so far. Maybe they got the hint and now find truly private places for their private interactions. It's great!

This sums up my feelings more or less, better and I ever could.Cogliostro wrote:Another couple days pass with the new overhearing possibility (even though it's so very low now) and I'm personally liking it more and more.
