rklenseth's violent system

Postby rklenseth » Fri Apr 16, 2004 3:46 am

I thought this needed a thread of its own since I always post it under another thread. :D

I want a more revamped system with fatigue. So you cannot attack or even block that well the more tired you get. It'll allow an assassin to be able to strike one politician (but than he would have to deal with the guards unless...). Also would allow for gladiator fights and the such. Also add wounds that could affect the way you fight and defend. Also allow for people to sleep and rest to allow their endurance to get back up full but when one is sleeping and resting they are more vulnerable to attack. For wounds, one would have to actually tend to them in order to get back up in strength (bandages and medicines). After each hit allow the chance for someone to be knocked out or pass out for each 1 point of damage done to person (passing out from loss of blood). The lower the person's strength the better chance they might be knocked out. Someone who is knocked out can be dragged easily by two people. A person knocked out on a trail will end up back in the other town. Extra damage can be sustained from bleeding. Each succussful chance of damage against person can result in a wound that bleeds. After each turn if the wound is not tended to then it will lead to damage and perhaps even death if it isn't tended to. Bleeding can stop naturally on a percentage. Other people also can tend to wounds of other people especially if person is knocked out. Unattended wounds, even if bleeding stops, if not tended to could lead to infection that could cause damage as well sort of like bleeding would except it would be harder to stop. Infection can also heal naturally. A person who is knocked out has a chance of waking up every turn but it would depend on an equation between the person's strength and fatigue. The lower the both than the lower the chance that person wakes up but as long as someone tends to wounds and using medicines then the chance is raised that the person wakes up. This could lead to real doctors and nurses in game.

A combat system like this could also lead to more stragety and tactic among armies. Walking, and doing other physical work would also affect fatigue so now commanders would find easier ways to transport troops so not tire them out so much or calculate their attacks against their foe. Perhaps even using tactics as having reserves rather than throwing everything they have at the enemy.

This would also allow rebalance the system between large groups of people and small groups. Now a group of three to four people with crossbows and iron shields won't have much of a chance (but they would still have a chance) to take out a large group of people (lets say 30) with no weapons and shields. The 30 people would still sustain losses but it would allow more power behind numbers rather than small groups. A mob of 30 people could easily overrun three or four people no matter what weapons or shields they have.
Just my thoughts.

Sounds nice, but way too complicated to work well I think. Plus I still disagree with the whole "4 men can't kill 30" argument, if those 30 people are sleeping and are ambushed by well armed men, then they don't have a chance, not in RL and they shouldn't in Cantr.

It seems everyone underestimates the power of surprise, which I don't know why, it's more powerful then any conventional weapon in RL or in Cantr.

On the other hand, inactive characters aren't really sleeping. We rationalize and RP it as sleep, but they're doing work. Also, real life people don't sleep for 23 hours a day.

Even if they are active they still wouldn't be able to beat them so your argument is mute.

When you ambush someone in real life you normally dont' get them while they sleep, you just walk up behind them or wait for them to come walking by and let them have it. And if they're working then that just means they're preoccupied with soemthing and that much more likely not to notice the attack coming.

It is extremly easy to catch someone off guard in RL, try it and you'll see. If someone doesn't consider you a threat it's very easy to take them out before anything is suspected, assuming of course you do it correctly, which if done correctly one person with a suitable weapon and surprise on their side should be able to take out 3-5 people depending on the various circumstances with no problem, and if you consider firearms in RL then that number would be doubled.

Also, in RL it's harder for a group to attack one person then one person to defend against a group, no one has yet considered that so many people attacking so few are going to be in each others way. The small group would form a circle facing out and covering each others backs, the large group would then have to come at them and probly no more then 10 peaple could effectively attack such a group at once. 30 people can't effectivly attack 5 people at once, it just can't happen.

@Richard: I don't know what you're trying to say in your last post

What I am trying to say even if the 30 characters were active than they still wouldn't win and would all die.

And the thing is how often do ambushes occur on such a large scale. You aren't going to ambush 30 people and win everytime. Plus after killing the first few the people will know full well what is going on and would then react and in the end would most likely win because they have stronger numbers.

Ah, okay, I got what you saying now, that even if the 30 were awake and attacked by a few well armed men as things are now the few would probly win. That is true, 30 awake and active people shouldn't be taken out by a few, unless those 30 aren't willing to fight back. I think lowering the damage that weapons do would do more to even things out then revamping the combat system right now. I would support a 5 or 10 point drop in damage for the most dangerous weapons before I would a new combat system. It's not that there haven't been good ideas, but no one has thought of an all inclusive combat system, real combat has so many varibles in it that it would probly be almost impossible to implement a system that isn't unbalanced in someway, so we may has well keep what we have now and just tweak weapon damage and stuff like that to balance things out better.

Lowering the amount of damage would have as an effect that battles could go on for several years...it is slow enough as it is.

Well then the other option would be razing the lower weapons and bare fists damage a few points. But I am in favor of a new system myself, but we should still keep it simple. I also think there should be more weapons.

There should be different grades of weapons for example if there was no steel to make a sabre you could use iron or stone etc. Civilization in RL didnt start off with steel weapons why should we?

There is a reason as to why we haven't created lower forms of weapons as we in resources are awaiting certain programming. So in the future it might be possible to have different types of weapons.
