Something for sailors. It's a suggestion that needs another.

The thing is, if you add too useful of items to be gathered at sea while sailing, sailing itself becomes too useful. Currently, food forces people ashore, so if you want to give them some sort of trade commodity to help them trade for things when they get where they're going... it should really only be trinkets, or else who would bother staying on shore?
Right now, sailors are in pretty high demand by people because boats go so much faster then their land-based counterparts, so they're highly effective as merchant vessels, and as a merchant vessel, they can trade for the things they need with the goods they amass.

Sailing's the only real thing that actually fully requires character alertness. Sailing's fun because you can go 360 degrees, changing your course whenever you like, keeping a watchful eye for a speck of land or another ship. The characters should be busy enough.
Then there's the whole "meet new people, see new places" aspect that seems to drive it more than anything else.
It's funny how rare and hard it seems to be to get good RP going with a static group. Seems like most people only get the spark to try to RP when they meet new people. Hence why it's "boring" to work inside and "boring" to sit on a sailing ship. In reality, it's just as boring outside if you don't RP, as really all you see is people arriving, introducing themselves, and then letting us all know they are "just passing through." RP with your companions in your static group, make some enemies in your static group, argue, joke, complain, whatever. That's what makes the game fun, no matter where you are. Not projects.

Chess and checkers come exclusively from RL western culture... anything like that should be invented IG.
Since when is chess an investion of the west? (Unless you equate chess with western chess of course.

Chess is a recreational and competitive game played between two players. The current form of the game emerged in Southern Europe during the second half of the 15th century after evolving from similar, much older games of Indian and Persian origin...
