(Ah! The Clarke! Now I remember! And 1 Clarke is one tenth of a day's walk? Or... how was it... The amount of something or the time needed for improving the road, or something like that. Amazing, I wouldn't ever believed possible, that in a virtual reality such a deep cultural tradition-system develops. Wow.)
So, I think the most humane way to measure distance, is in "days of travel" by foot, of course. I think that should be standard. Even if half of the pop. uses vehicles. This "Clarke"-thing, and other special measurements may be very precise, but I think they are a bit over-civilized. The first point in talking about distance is nothing else, than talking about how logzi takes to get there.

I believe it was tied to the amount of sand required to improve the road. Somehow he recoqnized a corrolation between the time it took to walk a route and how much sand would be required to upgrade it -- travel a few roads and you'd have enouh data to roughly calibrate how far you travelled in a given amount of time.
It's a great idea as going purely based on times isn't reliable if a turn doesn't run right etc.

The Clarke is the number of kilos of sand needed to improve the road. The problem with a unit based on the distance a char can travel in a day is that that distance varies with the amount of stuff the character is carrying. The Clarke is constant, and a player can work out how many Clarkes his character travels in a day.

Sho, thanks for the info. I think that usually days or hours of walk is meant unencumbered, of course. People know very well, that a kilo or so of food does not slow them down significantly. Checking the sand needed is a very precise way, I suppose, it may be very useful for engineers of Camtr, but think about it: _what_ do Cantrians need the information concerning distances need for? They want to plan their routes of journay in an optimal way. But that planning usually involves many social and personal issues as well. This precision is useless precision. You won't change your usual route of resource-gathering just becouse you find out that an alternative path to the same resources is one hour closer than you thought it were. More important is that you already _know_ the people of your usual resource-location. That's speaking about economy, of course, but in the case of politics, social or personal affairs, there are similarly important factors at work, other than the exact distances as well.
And talking about days or hours of is a bit more palpable, and down-to-earth. I like it.
