Boat Control Locks
I was thinking about piracy and the suchlike (as 2 of my charries are currently being/have been hijacked recently) and I thought of a way to stop the "crazy newspawn jumps on your boat and undocks, making you spend another cantr hour to redock"...the possibility of locking the ships controls, if the lock had to be made for each boat (as opposed to being there when its built) it would still allow hijacking.
Just wondered what people think of the idea...

This has been suggested before, but it's never, ever been a bad idea.
There is a simple solution though, KEEP YOUR BOAT LOCKED!!!
That being said, This is still a good idea. Even with people on board that have been screened by you letting them on board, a way to keep people from "experimenting" and playing around with the controls would be a god send. Or Jos send, as the case may be.
I would gladly build these locks if they did not allow any form of course change, and did not allow docking procedures to be started, unless the controls were unlocked, or the operator had the key.
Aside from ego, there is no way to decide who directs the ships in cantr beyond whoever is the most active and alert.

Reality was never my strong point.

What making it take a few hours for someoen without the key to unlock the controls?
I don't know.
That might be an idea for more electronical compontents
Electronical boat control.

Since each boat is equipped with a key at the start... Would it be possible to have only the holders of keys to the boat have access to the controls... especially docking?

I think you should be able to give permissions to people. Admin, if you will. If you wish for someone as well as yourself to be able to pilot your boat, you start project "make pilot" or something.. takes one hour, and afterwards, i guess it could be like a tool that takes up no room and is invisible in inventory, it lets that person pilot the boat. I dont like the idea of trusting someone, and then them just changing course whilst your on your way somewhere...

That "Admin" is called a lock. Your idea has merit, but will probably not be accepted, since Jos dislikes automation. Pity.
Ignition locks is a good idea though. Perhaps on all kinds of vehicles, then we can have taxis.

...The best reason why the original post is such a good idea.

Isn't it a bit like my suggestion in http://www.cantr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7354 ?

I was going to suggest this idea, so I searched for it, and clearly it's already been suggested before. Separate keys for control and for entrance, for all vehicles, would make carrying passengers easier in a realistic fashion. This could be applied to all vehicles, regardless of type (bicycles have tire locks, the wheel or rudder stick of a ship can be locked, ignitions have locks, etc).

Doesn't have to be electronic. Like moe said, chains and locks etc. would be fine.
Whilst you're adding this (
), think about machine locks: http://www.cantr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=432

Good idea. I hadn't thought about machine locks but they could conceivably be similar.
There would be more programming involved in that, though. You can build control locks from inside the vehicle, and that way you can build it through the regular build interface, since there's only one control system per vehicle. But there can be more than one machine in a location, so there would have to be a way to specify which machine you want to lock. Not that hard, but not trivial.
