Oars/paddles
At the moment, all boats have fixed max speeds based solely on weights... I'd like to see a new "machine" added. Paddles for small boats, oars for mid-sized. Paddles could likely be free as they'd be the "primary" method of propulsion, but oars would be an add-on to mid sized ships for combat situations. Basically the way these would work is you would participate on it like any old project and it would increase the boat's effective base speed by a percentage [effective base speed = base + (base * .1) so a speed 10 ship with one person working it becomes a speed 11 or 12 with two... not really sure how exactly weight affects speed, but it should be just more than balanced by working the oars]

I like the fact your considering upping speeds for ships cos it could be looked in to. First i think the effect weight has is too much, slowing some ships down to walking speed. The fact maximum weight exists is good but the penalty for loading your ship to capacity is too large, i'm suggesting to improve the numbers by a good deal, between 30 and 50%.
The fastest ship (raker) moves 60, correct me if that's wrong, i suggest there should be faster ships to choose from. Some shiptypes are rare like the soarer, they are unpopular due to the fact they are too slow, too expensive etc. And i don't think i've ever even seen a skimmer sail.

yea, thats what I found....
I think we shoud get rid of it, and add the CLIPPA!!!
but anyway,
I think I've alredy suggested oars, or maby that was just sails...

I love it too (I am one of those suggesting oars and sails (and sails!)).
I wouldn't change the current speeds of the ships, just giving the extra boost.
One think to be considered is that people on boats can work while traveling (cooking, crushing minerals, manufacturing tools...). If the crew is going to be rowing, the increase in speed should worth the loss in other works (while one is rowing one can't work on other things).
Sails would be a luxury item (except for places with hemp) that boost the speed without requiring the crew working on it, BUT requiring a minimum crew on deck (depending on the size of the ship) in order to get the benefit of the sails.

Again, problem, the player base in Cantr is decreasing. We don't need things for lots of people to do, we need things that only a few people need to do, so encouraging large crews -doesn't- mean that large crews will appear, as I'm certain that the Cantr staff -must- have realised whilst trying to encourage other things.
However, I am all for the ideas of sails and oars that are an optional speed boost. Effectively if it speeds up boats it makes the world smaller which I'm all for

Tha Spanish player base is growing or keeping up. I am seeing crews of more than 6 people in the Spanish region. We DO need reasons to have so many people all together. If not, it always will be better to have 3 sloops with a crew of 2 each one, rather than having one raker with a crew of 6.
The fact that many places in Cantr-world have few population shouldn't hinder the interesting posibilities of cooperation that can arise in populated areas.
Moreover, adding posibilities that rewards cooperation without punishing the looners can't be unfair for anyone, I think. Please, deadboy, how could it be unfair the sails for the looners?

I say let everyone use it..... but I suppose we -could- have small sails for single, or two people, and large sails for three or more people (Or medium sails 3-4 people and large sails 5-6 people, whatever). However, I'd still prefer that the element of helping those who are in large groups should come from the speed of putting up the sails and that a single person should be able to put up a sail and it works automatically. However, so long as you provide a boost for all sizes of groups.... alright
