^^^ Maybe they realized they turned into what they were fighting :P

What I loved about the whole thing, was that every group on the island was the exact same, except for the Tribe and (kinda) the De Dannans. TBR was just little more protectionist, and had an economic strategy that was flawless. IMHO, I find it's a lot less annoying OOCly AND IC to have towns that simply restrict collection their primary resources to foreigners, encouraging trade, rather than having those stupid 10% taxes where councilors have to set the project up for your chars. VERY annoying when sleep kicks in

What I would love to see, though, is a K-Isle where every town had the same closeness and protectionist as the Blackrocks. The tension would be incredible. But, alas, it'll never happen. The one group that causes trouble will always be exterminated because a majority of people are simply subcontiously influenced with OOC morals that tend to reach extremities IG.

And I just realized I'm way off topic, and ranting kinda.. so... ignore this ;) Don't repond to anything past the first line :p

Cross' death :( was avenged and Kirinn liberated yet again. Nothing to do with tbr, though the story is much the same on a smaller scale as Wellspring had neither the history nor the followers of Nick. The Kwor Council sent their Farmers' and Seafarers' Guilds as well as the Templars, who were joined by people from Karnon, East Kol, Burgeo, and Firecam.

Tyson Braddock had it about right for Kirinn, but for its strategic location.

I don't know why but I like to think that it was because of Jim de Dannon's lack of honor in breaking his word in an attempted peace negotiation (it might not have been his idea but he was the decision maker).

Also, I'm postitive that Rosemary's curse had a lot to do with it. :D

I'm trying to write the story of the Blackwolves and de Dannon encounter but I can't remember the name of the woman who was released to the de Dannons. Can anyone help?

How can you be so sure she was a traitor? None of the De Daanans alive really know since they were imprisoned and only had words of TBR to go off on.

Well, some new Dannan members witnessed the treachery from inside the TBR HQ, well at least one did (me). In my mind, (or rather my characters) as bad as Jim was for kidnapping Rosemary, Nakita was a thousand times worse by betraying her own family. His goal is to right the wrongs and bring about a rebirth of Dannan honor. However, he isnt really good at talking to people -_-

Oh yes, and he relayed the information that she was a traitor to all Dannan members he saw and all members of the invasion force.

Ah good.. so you must know the story of what Nakita did! Do tell! One of my characters was imprisoned under TBR but never really knew how Nakita became a traitor. And from what he hears now from other characters in the game, it seems that.. she was innocent and was misjudged. *shrugs* I'm so confused as to what happened.

Well i dont know if its too much information, but as far as I know (as an eye witness) Nakita vouched for Nick's good treatment of Jim, despite the fact that she knew he was killing him. She was suposted to give Jim healing foods but gave them to Nick instead, and she gave the other Dannan members on the longboat a false sense of security, leading to their capture once Nick did kill Jim.

It wasn't necessarily OOC morality. There were clear economic and social reasons why TBR should become the enemy of other on K-Isle.

The strict control of hematite became, for obvious reasons, a sticking point for the rich/powerful/leaders of the island. As a result, it was in their interest to foster a dislike of the tribe.

The initial dislike, the stories of dreadful actions, were perpetuated by those with a reason too. neither did they complain much when the stories exaggerated through telling, as they are apt to.

The general populace hooked onto the idea of TBR as the 'enemy' (or, more accurately, the 'Other'). Not because they controlled hematite, but because they became a means of confiriming and reinforcing their own identities. TBR were the other - something which any identity requires. Who are we, if we are not someone else?

This use of the 'other' is common place in group identities. On many scales. Not least amongst national identities.

This is where it's possible to draw very interesting parralels between K-Isle identities and Europe.

It is exceptionally difficult to define a European identity. The cultures and societies which Europe encompasses are very diverse, often divergent. But, at the same time, it is useful to be able to define and relate to a European identity (if one lives in Europe), for political, social and economic reasons.

In the past, during the formation of the 'idea of Europe', the political elite of Europe employed similar tactics as the policitical elite of K-Isle. The goals of the European eliute were social identification for forseen political and econmic gain (the actuality of those gains is another discussion).

Europe was construed, in part, as not being Africa/Asia/America, as being cultured (not barbaric), as being Christian (not Muslim). Turkey, Russia, Northern Africa and other neighbours were considered to be the 'Other' through which a European identity could be reinforced.

Whether this use of TBR as an identity-confirming 'Other' was a planned or fortunate by-product of the fosterment of hatred by the elite of K-Isle, I do not know. But it happened.

By portraying TBR as the 'Other', Kwor, Karnon and the DeDannans had a common ground upon which to come together. If not being the only reason for those ties, it certainly became one of the defining factors, and a great strengthener of those ties. It was possible not only for individuals to see themselves as Kworians but as Kworians and K-Islanders, allies of Karnon and the DeDannans.

TBR eventually left the island. But the hate, the need for TBR to be the enemy, followed them. It had clearly become much more than a dislike, by the elite, of their control of hematite. It had become ingrained in the psyche of K-Islanders.

It was a natural continuation of events that TBR should be hunted down. The issue, like these things are apt, snowballed. Beyond the control of those who had started it, to the extent that a war (with minimal justification) became the most obvious option, so that those who would normally be opposed to such things (including one of my characters) found themselves agreeing with, and following the turn of events.

Now, TBR are all but gone. The forest is under control of K-Isle once again, and Burgeo represents a land of wealth on the horizon.

The Church of the Holy Father is waning, its once magnificent structures lying unused and unseen - whatever common ground the Church once provided, it does no longer.

The DeDannans, from what I hear, seem to be disintegrating, or at least comming to terms with new leaders, and are thus without the capacity to engage in Island-wide issues.

The Karnon Imperials have a lot on their plate. They have expanded to encompass the Forest and the Port. As the Imperials are apt to do, even in peace time, they are expanding their armed forces, and (last I heard) their navy is said to be comparable to that of Kwor's great forces.

Kwor may not be at her peak, but she still goes strong. Great names of long-ago are gone, and no longer in the thoughts of the bustling metropolis. The decentralised guild system continues to function, and the council, with a clear and active figurehead for the town, continues to direct the goings-on.

Alongside this, there are the KORT and the ever-present possibility that KDF, or another internal faction may grow in power and size.

With the loss of TBR, the thoughts of the elite have turned inwards. The alliances remain, but any closeness has gone.

Is it still possible for an individual to feel as much a K-Islander as before? Will the alliance formed to oppose the Tribe hold? Or are the powers of K-Isle to become more insular, and possibly to become competitors for Burgeo?

(This should have been a 'Zine article... I always knew there could be parallels between academic political theories of the real-world and the Cantr microcosm...)

De Dannans were never meant to do anything but protect their fields and give shelter and help for those in need. From my characters perspective they should never have left to go to war, it kind of made them loose the original de Dannan identity and those surviving didn't know what to go back to once the war was over.

The Capture of Jim de Dannon and the Rescue of Rosemary Black

Here's what happened as I remember it and my memory of that time is pretty bad since I was exhausted from staying up 24 hours a day (or so it seemed) to fight against the invaders.

Rosemary Nickolodian Black was spawned only a few days before her quiet town was invaded from the sea by evil, mysterious creatures. She named herself after her leader, Nicki Black of the Black Wolfe Clan (formerly Tribe Blackrock) and devoted herself to helping save her community. She sprang into fearless and tireless activity when she saw that few Black Wolves were awake. Having little choice, Nick soon made her his primary land-based strategist and spokeswoman for the clan since he spent most of the war at sea attacking boats.

Rosemary was a petite woman who was a weak and pitiful fighter but that never stopped her from trying! She would go outside the clan’s locked building regularly to check for enemy boat landings. If she saw a boat she would organize anyone who was awake to run out and attack. This kept the enemy from breaking the locks on the buildings and boats since they were forced to undock or risk death. Anyone caught off of their boat was dragged inside and locked up. That’s how they captured Nakita de Dannon, I think.

Jim de Dannon passed a note inside demanding the release of Nakita. Nakita had already told Rosemary during interrogation that she didn't want to return to Jim. She hinted that he had forced her into a sexual relationship where she was regularly abused and that she had only been pretending to love him to save her life. Rosemary took an inexplicable liking to Nakita even though she was never sure whether Nakita was lying about this and/or many other things.

When the de Dannon landed, Nick and Steven (who were both tremendously strong) happened to be resting in the Blackwolves stronghold and, despite Nakita's story; Rosemary talked Nick into releasing her as a gesture of peace, hoping that it might end the attacks on their home.

After Nakita was released the de Dannon's broke their word and dragged Rosemary into their boat. Rosemary was furious and immediately started screaming at Jim de Dannon, telling him that he stank of dishonor, that he was a coward, that his own people would stop respecting him and so forth. She also put a curse on Jim and all of the de Dannon’s that they would never prosper and would disappear from the earth. She didn’t realize that Nick had already dragged Jim inside. Heh.

I was soooooo afraid Rosemary would be killed. I had never had a character killed and the prospect upset me a lot. She was only 10 days old! Nick came back outside and Rosemary handed him her keys, weapons, shield and healing food for the good of the clan. She was completely vulnerable and helpless.

Eventually, Nick and Nakita got the de Dannons to release her in exchange for their leader, Jim. They had to release Rosemary first, though, to get him. Nakita went back inside to make sure Jim was still alive. She came back outside and told them to release Rosemary. As soon as her foot hit the dock Nick dragged Rosemary inside (I think I was asleep) and then Nakita went back in, too! Of course, Jim was not released. Nick wasn’t that nice. Heh.

At this point the Black Wolves were so totally winning the war. They had killed about six people and somehow got the rest of the de Dannons as prisoners with no losses at all. Maybe someone else remembers how that happened. I recently learned that 1/3 of the invading K-Island forces had already returned home. How could the Black Wolves loose? Well, that’s another, sadder, story.
