1. Bromwell High - yip, seen it... heh....
2. Cantr 3-d: Sure... and while we're at it, I'd also like my chars to be able to build everything I can imagine, at no cost in resources, in no more time than 5 seconds.
I guess we're all out of luck.
That time it takes to build things, by the way, is another one of the charms to Cantr that makes going 3-d into one of those "let's deny we ever had part in this"-ideas.
As it is now, with just text, you can rp taking a break from a long project to have fun.
In 3d you'd have to actually stop that project to do something else.
And in text, it's actually funny to take such "breaks" and type something.
In 3d you'd get bored with watching your char keep on hammering away at a pile of hematite for 15 days, or at a boat that takes 12 days to make.
So, people get bored with a 3d cantr and end up forgetting about it.
Characters end up going into collective bouts of starvation and heart-attacks, due to the "sleeping sickness" going around like it owns the world of Cantr.
Then, as already mentioned, there's the "behind the scenes"-part of it all.
The people working on that are themselves players who give up their own time to work on it.
Text-based is fairly easy (relatively speaking) to maintain.
A small glitch in a text-based game engine can take days to find and fix.
Now imagine having to peer through all the code that would make it 3d....
"We're sorry, but due to someone missing a spelling-error Cantr will now be offline for the next 85 days".... yeah, that'd be real popular among players.
Add to that the server load that would happen, for just one town....
And I'm talking of a small town, not a large one.
Then, the time limit... how charming would it be to see someone coming at you with a weapon, and you wanting to use healingfood... but alass, you're one second too late and the time limit nails you.
The next day you might not be able to make it back to the game in time... and when you get back at last, you see that same hostile char giving you one final blow.
3d would be nice eyecandy if:
- there would be loads of money and excellent equipment (servers).
- there was no time-limit.
- everyone was on at the same time, dealing with eachother in real-time.
(as it is now, it can take days to get a response from another player)
- you want to give up the fun of using your imagination.
- someone describes how he hops off a bike full of energy, while the graphics show him just sliding off... and you don't get annoyed by this.
- you don't get annoyed by watching vehicles that are stocked with smokers, stone tables, spits, small firepits and such...
Meh, the list would go on and on.
Let's just say this:
You want a 3-d Cantr? Try suggesting the people of those 3-d avatar chat sites that they should incorporate a game like Cantr.
I'm sure once they stop laughing that they'll get right to work for ya.
* Edit:
91% no, I guess that says it all.
Those who play Cantr, do so because of it's charms.
Those who want 3d play completely different games.
And I don't want to come off as being hostile here, on the contrary, but if you type stuff like "sux", "h8", "gr8", "would b beta" (or another variation: "wud b beta", then maybe coming to a text-game isn't such a great idea, unless you're capable of keeping that out of the game, in which case, go for it.
Cantr isn't WoW, Cantr isn't Moove, and Cantr certainly isn't msn...
If I want hamburgers, I go to McDonalds... if I want nasi, I go to a Chinese restaurant.
I don't go to McDonalds and then try to turn them into a Chinese restaurant.
On a lighter note:
There was a thread somewhere about a game that came close to a 3-d version of Cantr... Was it "Children of the Nile" or something like that?
I'm too lazy to search right now, so maybe someone else can find it back.
On an even lighter note:
Bite me
