Follow Nearby Boat

Postby MrPenguin589 » Thu Jun 29, 2006 9:43 pm

Basically, it's like matching someone's speed on a road, except you do it on a boat, and you follow their direction as well. I'm not sure if this should be an on/off thing where if the boat your following changes direction, you do as well. But in either case, it should also be made so that if you cannot see the other boat anymore, you just continue going how you are.

I like the idea, its logical and makes sense but, before that, there needs to be some way that you can see in which direction and at which speed another boat is going, even if it's only slower than you/the same speed as you/faster than you.

This would be fairly easy to guage in real life..

Why not get this implemented for vehicles before we go chasing boats?

Boats are more common than other vehicles, are they not?

Hmm and vehicles already can match speed, and vehicles only travel in two directions.. up or down the road...

Hear, hear! That has always annoyed me that it is more convenient to chase a notethief on foot.

Adding it to ships would be nice, but I am sure that there are several layers of complication to the code, as it would have to match speed and direction.

Can you know other boat's speed and direction? Maybe I'm missing something, but you can't. So such adjusting would give you knowledge that normally you wouldn't get.

Because of the complexity involved with boat travel (essentially full free roaming) compared with the single path case of land travel - this would be very difficult to implement and probably represents a level of automation above what is required.

What may be a compromise to help following other boats would be to show relative direction of travel of all visible boats - We'd have to think about speeds - they may just be general relative speeds (slower than you, same speed, faster ) as currently available in land travel

And, dear God, don't do automatic chase mode ;)

what about a device for measuring your speed? a knotted rope with something on the end to catch the water like used in ye olden tymes, just let it pass out over the stern and see how many knots pass in a given time.

Please use the search function - measuring boat speed has been suggested many times before

Only found the one thread http://www.cantr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6444&highlight=measuring+boat+speed

but it was relevant to the discussion, I felt

That would surely open up the 'measure of distance' can-o-worms..

I'd be perfectly happy to see relative speed and direction which reflects real life..
