unnamed location

Unnamed location?

Bring back location names, but keep dynamic naming too. Landmarks can indicate new names.

Good idea for me.
Perhaps a site could be called something like: "apples-potatoes-stone".
That's a great description. But in some cases, you're giving some kind of advantage on the planning: your character will know where to go when they are hungry, for instance.

A neutral description should be like this: "a mainly agriculturist site" or a "mainly mineral site".

There is no return to not dynamic names, even if some of us liked them. You all should know that. I think that we need vehicle names amnesia too. Strong reason: some people use OOC to predict what will happen. Then maybe buildings amnesia too? But not util there will be possible labels for them.

What is asked for is not back to not dynamic names. Just the names back and keep the dynamic names. There is alot more parameters here to think of than just a change back to how it was.

The locations are bad enough as is. They need some kind of basic description, yet a unique one to see what they are. Why not for simplicity sake assign them a name?

I agree!

Don't use laziness as an excuse. Taking a few seconds to type in a name for an unknown location isn't going to make you miss out on anything. It's not some gorram penalty... sheesh.

I understand some of the nostalgia arguement, but chances are if a place was important enough, the people who are there probably still refer to it by the original name.

If you're an explorer, go ahead and name your own landmarks. That's the perk of being an explorer. How good did Amerigo Vespucci have it, eh? Two whole continents... and all Alexander the Great got was a handful of cities...

Boring... pfeh...

When dynamic naming was introduced, before amnesia, very few places were renamed. So lazyness is a problem in that sense too. If all places, buildings, characters are unknown before dynamicly named, this just force the lazy not to be. With known names to most things people can be lazy if they whant to or active if they whant to. If changing default name of things in some way is made possible when I think the forced actvieness is put in the right place. On the character that whant to change a buldings, locations... name.

few seconds? sure per thing multiply that by a 1000 for every character on every location. It adds up to time you could be falling in love, beheading a prime minister, plotting a course to get away with all these precious notes, talking smack to the mouthy guy with the sabre, etc.

Would you rather have dull mundane task than something fun?

 If your character travels to a 1000 different places, you're probably not doing any of the above anyways.

And seriously... in a game as slow-moving as cantr, this is somehow conflicting with your character's hectic schedule? Sorry, but if you play cantr, you ipso facto have a lot of down time when nothing else is going on. Perfect time for dynamic renaming.

I disagree. Before the amnesia, people didn't rename places because there wasn't a need and/or it would just be too much of a headache to constantly correct every newspawn who sees the original name automatically instead of the intended name.

I think that the first impression of an area's name is important. If I go to a location currently called Iraq, I don't want to be confused into calling it Mesopotamia. The original name no longer applies. The name that is current is accepted by the current people, and probably has some connotation or meaning. If a name is just given to us by Jos, it has no real meaning.

What's in a name? A lot more than you'd think. Forcing dynamic naming forces cantr to become a more interesting place, imo. Now people have reasons for their location names, and that ergo fleshes out more history and culture.

No! The reason why pople didn't rename places was that it wasn't possible. It still isn't possible. Dynamic naming is not the solution for this. I whant it to be possible to rename the default name so that every newspawn sees the intended name and not the old one ant not either "unnamed location". Dynamic naming should offcourse still be there!

Imo not. Dynamic naming does, but forcing dynamic naming does not. Changing default names would even more imo.

The Blackrocks tried calling Karnon Forest, "Blackrock Forest", before the amnesia. But I hear what you are trying to say... you want cantrians to be able to change the base name of a place that appears to everyone? That'd be fine with me... but I doubt it would be feasible. And if it were, every dickhead newspawn would try to change it.

If you can change the default name, then I would agree with you. But again, I really don't see that as happening.

You make a good point in all honesty. But my quarrel is not the Dynamic naming. I actually like that. My problem is the unnamed location everywhere I see. It`s annoying and unnecessary and kills quite abit of time imo. And I dont mean traveling to 1000 different places I mean naming the buildings, the vehicles, the exits, the people, It gets immense. And it serves no purpose to better my experience. Can you please tell me what you get out of it?

Annoying? Perhaps. But unnecessary?! Think of how many times in real life you give name to something? Why do you do it? To define it. To differentiate something from something else. You have to name things.

As for why having something be an unknown to begin with? So that others can influence your opinion on what to call it. In the States, some people say "soda," others say "pop." It's the same thing, but if a person says "pop" you can probably determine that they're from the American Midwest. It may be a silly real-life example, but I think it serves it's point. A rose by any other name would not smell so sweet.
