If someone really really wants cotton, say they just have to have a cotton robe or toga, they'll pay more for it, and somebody else could have a farmer who wants a pair of hemp work gloves way more than sissy cotton or silk ones.

I would argue that we having nothing else but the description to base worth when it comes to clothing (this is a text-based game). And certainly, a character who would not wear dresses to begin with would probably not be interested in either. But sometimes a few key descriptors can make a real difference in how a clothing article will appear:

"a coat of finely woven cotton fiber droops down almost to the knees, fitting tightly around the body"

"a white jacket with long sleeves and embroided patterns indicating the fine workmanship made of a soft, strong, and absorbant material with a brilliant sheen"

Edit: Sorry, Hermi. I basically reiterated your post.

Nice! You should get on the staff and make clothes. :)

Lol.. he is on the staff and is the one that's changed most of the descriptions... :)

And regardless, I still think it's not much to ask for some sort of machine (is there even any sort of tool?) to make cotton slightly more easily gathered, as it's not used merely for aesthetic clothing purposes, but also more "practical" ones like beds (yea, it's quoted since they're not really practical because tiredness isn't a huge thing anymore).

Even if it's considered poor RP, that's most likely how many people make their decisions for their characters because it's not that important of an RP factor for them. Like I stated before, I would hope there would be more complex decision making in that than simply looking at the description, but it's just how it is.

Edit: Lol no prob, BC.. and Mael was quicker at telling about his involvement in the clothing process than me... lol

So we want to adjust for the fact that players are treating silk as more valuable/desirable than cotton, even though in game they're currently comparable (or with cotton actually being -more- valuable than silk) by aligning the game to match the real world expectations of the players, as opposed to their characters adjusting to the way things are in Cantr?

Come off it thats a load of toss, Gold is more valuable than silver... that's got nothing to do with its occurance in game, Even the most old and connected player in the whole of cantr cannot have visited every location to know which is more common ...

Gold is valuable because its valuable IRL, or its more valuable because its rarer in cantreality in which case you are CRBing because that is information that 99% of characters could only know from info outside the game!

We expect players to spawn knowing certain things, like you can't eat wood, you attack animals, the value of somethings is similar intrinsic knowledge (oooh it glitters, it shine,... or .... oooh it feels so nice on my skin)

In fact, at some point IRL silver was rated higher than gold. I think I've seen more gold in Cantr than silver. My characters would wear what best fits their colours. Or the ones that care about dressing up... many don't even think about jewellery. But at least half would be happy to have cotton.

Or because it is gathered at a slower rate, or it is more valuable because it can be used to make high quality radios.

It takes 3250g of cotton to be able to make 1000g of medium rope from cotton. One option besides a cotton harvesting machine, would be to add a tool to gathering cotton. Scissors could easily be added to gather cotton at 150g per day.

I guess I should have payed more attention to that text below your name... But okay, anyway, you've got no excuse for not turning that description into a real dress then. :P

And about the gold, silver thing...actually it was pretty funny the time I came across someone (who was obviously knew to the game) who assumed that gold had any real value. If this hadn't been with such a nice character I would have ripped them off by making them do a bunch of work for the few grams I was carrying around unntil I found nickel. Copper is probably more valuable than gold or silver, just because it's used for more machines, and boring old ugly iron is worth more than all three of them put together, so so much for real world value and yay for roleplay, in that case.

How the improved Ginning and Double Gather Rate suggestions would effect the intristic value of clothes.

. . . . . . . . . . .Current . Gin (10%) . Gin & Double Gather
Silk Dress .. . . . . 15 . . . . . . 15 . . . . . . 15
Cotton Dress . . . 14 . . . . . . 12 . . . . . . 8
Hemp Dress . . . . 1.8 . . . . . .1.8 . . . . . 1.8

Leather Tousers . 10.9 . . . . 10.9 . . . . 10.9
Silk Trousers . . . . 8.5 . . . . . . 8.5 . . . . . 8.5
Cotton Trousers . . 12 . . . . . . 9.8 . . . . . 6.1
Hemp Trousers . . .3.5 . . . . . . 3.5 . . . . . 3.5

Leather Jaket . . . 16.2 . . . . . 16.2 . . . . 16.2

(Values in days required to produce)

Just because these figures are the intrinsic value of the cloths, does not mean the characters in game would set the price of clothes at these values.

I have characters that sells iron sheilds at 30 day rates, even though a sheilds intrinsic value is closer to 10days.

The intrinsic value is the only real value we can compare the balance of clothes against as the additional perceived value is always goign to be character specific; due to

1. The Characters Perceived Need.
Doesn't matter if a character wants a material for clothes, equipment or even a machine. If that character wants it, they will be willing to pay much more for it, and go as far as they need to to get it.
2. Distance from the Character.
If the resource is a long way from the character then the value of that material will go up proportionally, simply because of the transport time saved.

Perception on a material such as cotton or silk, will effect a characters need or desire for the material. And as you have already clearly stated what one character wants another would feel particularly uncomfortable in.
But that doesn't chance how hard it is create, just limits the sort of markup you can place on it.

First off, thank you for appreciating the new texts.

Second...I must point out that is, in fact, the description for the cotton dress.

I think cotton collection rates are fine the way t hey are. I think the way the classes handle the sale of fabric is resemblant of how the societies are. I think interfering with the rates at which cotton are gathered will interupt trade flow as well as the classes you can see forming through out the cantr world.
I hate people.

I don't see how either side was illogical. :P

I think Tal's example of the rope made from 3,250g cotton is a good reason why cotton should at least have a simple tool that helps by 25 or 50g. :P And I hardly think that 25 or 50g would have that big of an impact on trade. Maybe 75g would, but 25? The gathering rate is already so small that even a 25% increase is minute, especially if everything else is left as it is.
