It's prolly been suggested already but....
The whole "renaming cities" thing....I think..would be more realistic, if none of the cities had pre-set names. If, as a newspawn you read every name of every city as "Unknown City" or something like that, and rename it yourself. And of course when you ask, the people of the city could tell you what its name is...make sense? As I said I'm sure its been suggested and rejected or something..but in case it hasnt..here it is.
I just can't stop coming back....

When this was discussed (the mass amnesia topic) it was voted down, against the better judgement of many (including myself).
Quite simply it should happen... you should forget the names of buildings and locations outside the town you are currently in.
I don't understand why people voted against it... its only the older characters that get screwed, and no-one seems to care about them getting repeatedly screwed by every other change...

I believe the main argument for the nay sayers was that it would cause initial confusion. But to them I say...
GET OVER IT
It would be a huge improvement for Cantr. It would make maps more necessary and therefore frequent, and town's names would have actual meaning, rather than just random names Jos chose.

....and if you remember what a certain town was called, your character that is, then you can always just type it in............thats what i mean..just to clarify...

I don't think that would be as easy to implement, or really necessary whatsoever.
All strings for town names and building names should be changed to player alterable variables, with the defaults of buildings being something like "A building" or "A cottage".
More tags like <CANTR CHARDESC> should be added, like perhaps the building type could be made into a tag, so you can include it in naming the buildings if you so choose.

ok hold on a minute. I didn't mean building AND towns. Just towns. It makes sense that you would know what a building was called. cuz you can say there is a sign on there or something like that. A town it doesn't make sense, although there COULD be a sign, but if the town name gets changed...i dunno...i guess it coudl work.
all i did mean though, was to reset all town names to "A city" or "an unknown city" or somethnig of the like.....all cities..everywhere....doesnt sound like it would be that hard...

Well regardless, that's what we were talking about quite a while ago, and this duplicate suggestion thread just served as a medium for us to continue that argument.
Towns AND buildings should be dynamic. I don't know if a building is a police station or a brothel, unless there's a sign, or someone tells me.
Drop me off in a random city, and I probably won't know where I am until I'm told or I find out by other means.

Hold on...of course you would know the name of a city, building you'd never encounterered before because a bloody great sign would be telling you. So it's realistic if we look at buildingsand see the name. What isn't realistic is that we can't change that signpost. Dymnamic naming hasn't helped that not really, just confused the issue further. You look at a building for the first time, and the sign on the door tells you a name that all the locals have completly forgotten, because they call that building something else now.
If you want to tell someone in another town to go to Siom City Apartments, for example, you have to remember that the building used to be called Siom Potato Store (or whatever it was. Something vaguely similar) and tell them to go there instead. Hell, it's just absurd. How do newgbies know something that everyone else has forgotten? It's like the signs dont ever change= but if you use dynamic naming, then those signs become unreadable to you (and only you).
What we really need is some kind of "Change the name of this Town/ building " project. When the project is complete, that alters the name which evrtybody sees
How to stop random newspawns abusing that? Hmm..I can think of a few ideas of the top of my head. Say, .the project needs a certain number of people to participate before it starts working? (say two to three for a building . More, perhaps, for a whole town). Or (more realistic, but maybe harder to implement) make it a fairly long, but reversible project. So if catch the little blighter before he's finished , you can undo his vandalism with a little bit of effort on your part (or his, as you stand behind with a whip)
(I'd like to see a lotof projects made reversible anyway, so you can undo certain well-known acts of sabotage - and also silly mistakes- without asking the ProgD to intervene)
