French area dead body check..

Postby Snake_byte » Thu Aug 18, 2005 5:01 am

I looked at a dead body in the French area

"Ce corps semble dater de six mois, tout au plus. Il semble que la cause du décès serait attribuable à une crise cardiaque, ou quelque chose de ce genre."

Umm how long is a month? Isn't it supposed to be years?

Should it be "six années"? I used a translator, so I've no idea how accurate it is :P

No body would yet say six years old.......this feature hasn't been in game long enough. I would think it would read in number of days, as there is no other time frame in Cantr.

Most definitely not. We want "half a year," not "six years."

My guess would be "Ce corps semble dater d'un demi-an, tout au plus." (Or is it "une demie-année"? Or something else? Didn't take a French class last year.)

Some languages use six months = half a year. Maybe it could say ten days instead if half a year is too hard to translate.

If I remember correctly, the original English was : this body seems to be about half a year old, or something like that. It is difficult for me to check the original tags, because they are hard to locate, without the original English title.
It is like Seko says.
Simply that in French we do not say « une demi-année » nor « un-demi an». Both sound very awkward. I have been a Francophone all my life and have never heard that expression myself.
This is why I converted it into months, which sounds much more natural in French. It is the same time period, you know !

N.B. For those of you who do not yet know it, I am the official French translator. Those who do not know it, apparently do not read their Cantr Webzines ;-)

...this being said...
I see what you mean !
Indeed, a Cantr year is only 20 days, right ?
Sorry...had forgotten about that :?
So, obviously, it should be ten days, and not 6 months.
OK...I shall have to change it to : vous voyez un corps qui ne date que d'une dizaine de jours, or something like that.... but definitely not "une demie-année »
Thanks for pointing that out to me.
Now, where is that darned tag again !??!!?

Yes unless we want to incorporate the month... Using this calender 1.6 days is a month...

...darn* tag.
Uhhhh...is that really necessary ? Sounds a bit complicated to me.
Mind you, the semantic difference between a body dated "half a year", and....merely ten days, is quite large, in the real world. Still, that is how the Cantr year goes and obviously, I shall have to get used to that ;-)
I have just made all of the necessary adjustments, BTW. Feel free to let me know what you think of them.
If any of you folks find any other errors, or...if you have any comments, suggestions, complaints, questions, etc. about my translations, please send me a personal message, in the future, to attract my attention to your query, if you wish me to act on these. I pretty much only check the Languages Department, General staff and French forums religiously. All of the others, I only tend to glance at, once in a while, time permitting. A PM would certainly attract my attention immediately. I was not even aware that this post existed, up till now. A Cantr friend had to point it out to me.
Thank you in advance.

There are 36 minutes in an hour, not 60.
There are 8 hours in a day, not 24.
So, why must there be 12 months in a year (20 days divide by 12)? You could have 4 months in a year, a month being 5 days instead. See, all "non-realistic", but Cantr style.

Even then, 20 divided by 4 is 5. Not 6. There wouldn't be 6 months to begin with...
