Match speed with vessel.
Like the Equal button on a road, but next to a ship on the location tab when sailing. You'd have to guess at the direction they're going in, but with the new arrows, its easier.

I don't like this suggestion - it's not the same issue as on roads where there was little infomation about relative speeds and direction is limited to two options.
All the visual clues are now available to do this in game whilst sailing , I don't think it should be automated as requested here . I appreciate that the visual cues don't help the people with accessiblity issues but that can be addressed in other ways.

I'm also for the automation. It makes travelling between islands easier as you can just follow someone else without worrying that if you don't log on for a day you will lose them and starve

Actually
That's where you're wrong.
People would set it to automatic in their faster vessels and leave their game for a few days expecting to catch up with them.
Some clever sailing and you can crash them into land, stopping the automation, and sail off scott free

Yeah... at first glance this seemed like a good idea. Fleets of ships could sail together without much effort.
However I think it would quickly turn into a means for pirates, as well as pirate-hunters to chase down their prey. I think there should be an element of luck and/or skill involved in either, not a simple automated button.

Matching speed without automation is very difficult, why not allow it? I don't really understand the objections.
Of course, you would not totally follow the vessel automatically. You just match speed (only speed) at the moment you press the button. If the other vessel then changes course or speed, you still need to react yourself.
