Ok, I need to rant....
I must side with the folks who agree that such chatter about in-game events should be best left out of the forums until WELL after an event occurs, if even then at all.

I've got a character on Karnon, who has no clue who the blackrocks are, has not yet heard about this so-called war, and is essentially merely exploring the island and confirming the map she found is correct and accurate.
Thus, if I met these near-mythological TBR folks (at least a demi-godly group of demon-blood evil-doers the way their initials are thrown around on the forums lately) I'd have no reason to fear them. I'd just wander away, as this character is a bit of a loner who explores and is writing a novel about her travels.

I feel I can keep the OOC knowledge about the war out of her in-game head, but even avoiding reading the forums, there is enough chatter mixed in the threads that ARE read by Nate-the-player, it's getting difficult NOT to form an opinion, and that makes things more difficult keeping OOC/IC split. Regardless of my effort, I still fear a bit of OOC influence will somehow sneak into how I portray that character, which I think we all want to avoid. :?

Yeah, ultimately it depends on the player to keep an OOC/IC separation but if people don't talk about IC events OOC, it's much easier and actually much funnier!

You haven't seen Valsum's RPing....

Like I said... if there is truly a consensus... which I don't believe.. fine just ban all discusiion of IG events... That would never happen because too many people want to brag about what their characters get up....

It's a double standard! People want to broadcast how clever they were for this and that, or how good they RP that character but then can't handle the fact that this will to some extent affect the game...

This forum is far from being a tech support and development forum so you can't pretend it is. Nate you make a choice to play your cantian(s) with a character and a life that is totally sepparate from yours and I honestly don't beleive you have a serious problem separrating the two..

You cannot give up the OOC rubbish without making cantr something that is very self contained and insular. You might have the strongest fighter, the best pirate, the most skillful and succesful tailor but I don't see many players here who play Cantr just for the reward of knowing that just for themselves. Even the I am, I was threads are coded ways of trying to show our own prowess and skill at the game.

I honestly beleive it would be less fun without that... you can be a purist if you like, in which case stay out of the General Discussion Forum and keep to suggestions etc. I think it would be good if there was an announcement section so that the need to know stuff us there without wading through obscurely titled threads and IG stuff..

Just my thoughts but I think there is some real hypocrisy going on!

Phalynx, just curious, have you been suffering from PMS these last few days or what? :D

Seriously though, sure players love bragging about their characters, even though I usually stay out of it now because I learned the hard way that there are people here who don't mind abusing OOC info, but in general I don't see a problem with discussing an IC event....after the event has happened.

It's never been okay to talk about something major in progress before, why do so many people suddenly want it to be okay now?

(That's a retorical question...I know why, it's because people get worked up about something IC and want to either brag or complain OOC. Like when a character dies and you immediately want to talk about it or how lame the killer was on the forum, etc. It's natural, but that doesn't mean it's good for the game.)

Also, finding out about an event or death OOC before your character does sucks. It's like finding out what your Christmas present's going to be a month ahead of time and then having to fake being surprised. You may be happy to know what it is at first, but then when it comes time to open it the whole experience is ruined.

Marian is soooo right. That's the funnier I meant, which as Solfius posted should have been more fun.

Its been going on since well before i joined back last year... there were threads about it then, i'm sure! I remember discussing it, not in too great a detail...

And i liked having a charry on both sides... made things interesting, Even if one really kept himself to himself.

It has been going on for quite a while, and I do remember threads about it before. And I didn't like them then, and disagreed with some of the info that ended up being posted (too much info is not good, even if you think you can keep it seperate from the game, it becomes hard to remember what you know vs what your charrie actually knows) Though I believe that was during a period when no actual conflict (battle) was occurring.

Marian, you've said it well. The events must conclude first. Some may not know that it is not yet concluded, if their char has been killed, and it's understandable that they wish to find out what else has happened, or rant about what did happen, etc. Patience by all, please.

This is simply not true. The war against the Barons was not discussed, and had it been while it was occurring, the same action would have been necessary. I'm sure there are a lot of other examples, but the one that Marian often refers to in Zhift Forest helped most people realize the damage that can be done by discussing things too soon.

kinvoya wrote:How long before the war can be discussed? Who will make that decision? What will it be based upon?

Once it is over. As I have a char involved in this war, I know that it is not yet concluded. However, my charrie may not be in a position to know when it's over. So this is difficult to answer at this time. Once those still involved feel it is over, perhaps one of the players might post, asking if everyone agrees.

kinvoya wrote:I am essentially pointing out that these things are a little too arbitrary for me to consider them fair. If we have a four day rule then things that happened four days ago should be discussable. If we change it to 20 or 40 then that is at least a concrete number.

It is difficult to put an exact number on events. An individual event may have occurred four days previous, but if it's knowledge is apt to affect in-game developments/ongoing situations, then it shouldn't be mentioned. If it is an isolated situation that will affect nothing else, then the four day rule applies. And, as someone mentioned earlier, vague posts with no names regarding things of little to no consequence are not what is being targetted with regards to not mentioning them too early.

 I was wondering how long it would be before this was mentioned on the forums. Longer then I had thought actually.

I agree. I've been surprised it hasn't been thus far, as it has been over now for at least a Cantr year. (If this prompts a discussion on this, please start a new thread)

I must say, I appreciate the fact that I never read the general board until recently. For example, I had a character spawn in the former TBR HQ, and learned about the conflict from the TBR leaders, and he has also had the benefit of learning about it from those fighting against TBR (he was unarmed and in a jail cell, so i guess he wasn't much of a threat).

It was great because i had no ooc knowledge, but I would really like to see what really happened some time in the future, it really interests me. Maybe there could be something like an Encyclopedia Cantr which records all major events, with a minimum of 10 cantr years after their conclusion. It could be compiled by people who experienced it first hand through notes and diaries, so that people can look at the cause and effects of major cantr events. Maybe this could go up on the Wiki? (This is mainly fueled by my regret for allowing my first account to die off due to boredom, as I had a character which would have been around for the very start of the TBR conflict. He joined the De Dannans when there were only 2 left, Suzima and one other.)
