Permament Damage

Postby Stan » Wed Jun 08, 2005 2:04 am

Wouldn't it be interesting if you actually lost the use of an arm, leg, eye or whatever, permanently? I'm not sure how it would impair performance, but it would really add an interesting dimension to the game if towns had to find ways to deal with physically challenged people.

Perhaps scarring. Like if you end up taking a certain amount of damage you might get a certain amount of scarring, or perhaps when medicine replaces healing food, natural healing could leave scars while medical treatment would prevent it?

I hate when people roleplay this...
But if there was a reasonable way to implement it, it would be neat.

I wish more people would roleplay this. It's annoying enough to just know that you can have 80% of the life force beaten out of you and then magically recover like nothing happened. It's fun to see someone roleplaying the struggle to survive and regain strength, and for severely wounded characters to point out their scars and gimps when the heal. Just wish my critically wounded character could have survived for me to add some quirks and scars to him.

I'm not sure how I would like to see it implemented though. It would probably be best as a cosmetic description if we ever get such a thing implemented. Maybe loss of a limb could be factored into to striking / blocking efficiency, decreased movement, or decreased gathering capabilities. I think I would rather just see it to start in a text description on the character page, like:

a man in his twebties

he is weak and in his twenties; wearing nothing worth metioning
he has dark hair and eyes, medium height, above average weight
a long scar runs from his temple to his mouth and he is missing his left eye

Don't know how easy it would be to hardcode that kind of stuff. There have been enough discussions of the topic in the forum. A little bit of freedom would be nice with a dynamic string variable to hold a short player modifyable description that ought to be rather difficult to modify to cut down on abuse in the case of thieves.

I myself would like to see healing foods gone. A better system of bandages and medicines added that heal over time rather than automatically.

In combat, I would like the option of attacking different parts of the body. Some parts would be easier to hit while others would be harder but would allow more damage due to vital organs and such. Then we can see the introduction of scars and various other wounds. Like someone hits another person with a club and that person now has a broken arm etc...

Right that would be too complex and other changes are needed over these. But perhaps someday.

I prefer the cute, almost childish simplicity of healing food. Scarring, limb loss, topo complicated, too real. This is not a SIMS kinda thing, another idea I think should be left alone...

It sucks to see it roleplayed, because you can't tell unless you 'see' them roleplay it.
If someone wants to roleplay pain or struggling or whatever, that's sensible. If I see someone on the road with 80% damage, I am going to assume that they had a rough day, anyway. :D

Yeah I don't really like this idea, either. There are better things that can be worked on.

Personally, I like the current system.

In fact, if you ask me, Cantr is pretty well perfect as it is. All that really needs to be done is just give us more time to build societies and such.
