Cantr IRC Chat

Postby Cookie » Fri Jun 10, 2005 10:22 pm

Hmm yeh very nice. Tried this yesterday, first time and only time. Today on the other hand I found a virus nay eight of them on my PC. And have a guess where they came from! Yep! ...thats with about five firewalls on my computer.

Just a word of warning.

:)

That's nice of them.

Anyways, I don't visit that place anyways.

Oh, I have something related, but kinda...unrelated. Every so often when I load a page from Cantr, it doesn't always say it's loading/transferring/sending/ info to and from cantr.net, but rather something like something.ca.

Strange, just me?

I didn't explain that too well. :-(

On my PC, when I load a cantr page (i.e. opening a topic on the forums), my little bar on the bottom of my browser which always says "transferring data from http://www.cantr.net" (sometimes) instead says "transferring data from [some other site, which ends in .ca]". I just found this strange.

I'm on my laptop right now, and I haven't seen that occur yet.

Nitefyre, my guess as to why it's loading from a canadian site is that your ISP uses a web cache, which your browser is connecting to.

Cookie, there is no conceivable way how you could get a virus from using the web chat applet. The only way, in fact, to get a virus over IRC is by the user's own stupidity in accepting and opening files they are sent - and as far as I remember, the Java client we use on the Cantr website cannot receive files.

And, as an extra point - never have multiple firewalls on one machine - they interfere with each other and tend to be worse than useless. You'd be better have none - at least you would then KNOW that you're insecure.

What browser are you using? If you're using Internet Explorer, then NEVER blame anything else for any viruses you get, because it virtually certainly will be nothing else.

Ummm. Well try and concive a litle further. The virus was in the java documents on my computer under IRC.

Look I'm not going to sruge any further. i know exactly where it came from. Won't be going back. END OF STORY.

Could you flyspray it?

And don't forget to include broswer/anti virus software/perhaps your os?

We should look into this.

Cookie Monster, you seriously expect that a virus would TELL you where it came from honestly?

Most malware of any kind hides itself.

Tell me full details of your PC, OS, where the "virus" was exactly and the relveant filenames, which virusscanner you use, and so forth.

As to anyone else, I doubt that the Java-based IRC client we have on the website contains anything malevolent. We can check, of course, since Peanut and Jos added it.
Let's consider the rest of the IRC process, too...
Well, I have been using this IRC server for a year. I know who it's admins are, and I trust them. And I don't think there's any way they could give you a virus, since you connect to them with a very limited IRC client.
The other possible way is to accept a file send from someone else. Firstly, if you ever get a virus that way, there is NOBODY to blame but yourself - you chose to accept it; you take the consequences. Secondly, none of the regulars on that server would do that - I know them - and it's such a small server that anyone targeting it would be wasting their time. Thirdly, as far as I know, the Java client can not receive files in this way at all - it is a very primitive client, as I said.

Anyone who is using Internet Explorer regularly for web browsing will get viruses and malware almost certainly. Even with high security settings. It's HIGHLY recommended by everybody except Microsoft themselves (and anyone they pay) that at the very MINIMUM you use the highest possible security settings on IE along with a well-configured firewall. And no, the firewall included in Windows XP does not count. To minimise the risk, it is recommended that you run an alternative web browser that is 1. Less popular with crackers and "script kiddies", and 2. Less full of security flaws. Opera, Mozilla, or Firefox are three recommended browsers.

The only current reason to use Internet Explorer at all is to update your copy of Windows regularly.

If you accept files, run downloaded programs, or open email attachments without being sure what they are and without virusscanning them with a trusted, effective virusscanner (I personally recomend AVG from Grisoft), then you may give yourself a virus. And that would be entirely your fault.

If anyone does not trust the Java IRC client, by the way, I recommend either installing a standalone IRC client (mIRV, XChat, whatever...) or a combined IM program with IRC features (Gaim, Trillian), or using a CGI interface. And, lo and behold, this IRC server we use actually has it's own CGI web-based interface. A CGI IRC client does not run on your computer at all. It's run on the server, unlike the Java client we use, and it sends the information to your web browser. The server we use has a CGI client available at http://www.tauniverse.com (just click on IRC and look for the appropriate instructions.)

Ditto, Rev. I also recommend Chatzilla for Mozilla / Firefox fans as a stand alone IRC client. Got the job done for me anyway.

Also i'm mainly sure you can't use Dcc with the java chat.

So you can't get files trough the java applet.
