Do we have any artists? An Idea to Beautify Cantr!

Postby rklenseth » Mon May 30, 2005 9:36 pm

I'm not one in the sense I can't draw or paint but something I would really like to see are artist renditions of Cantr and its world. So I was wondering if anyone would be interested in holding a contest for artwork of Cantr that perhaps could be used to help advertise Cantr.

I recently tried to get a friend involved in Cantr but he was turned off by it because it was all text. He said he might have liked it better if perhaps there was artwork to make it interesting so maybe we can color up Cantr with artwork from the players. So maybe when you go to the build menu you see a picture of a crossbow next to the crossbow option when you go to build it.

This came up because my friend is a hardcore rpger, big on d20 and D&D, and he said one of things that make those kind of games much more appealing is that you get a glimpse of the world through artwork. If you ever go through these books you see a lot of artwork.

What do people think of this idea? I guess we don't have to be limited by drawings and paintings but can be photography, photoshop, etc... We are only limited by our imagination.

I made a self portrait, but I don't know how to get it off my computer and off to the internet, let alone onto a Cantr note.

I think that experienced game players are either into the things that make Cantr different or not. And if they understand how Cantr is different they won't really want or miss the artwork once they start playing.

We probably all have our own pictures of Cantr in our heads at this point and having actual pictures would be kind of distubing to my Cantr worldview.

It's like when you have a favorite book and have your own ideas of what the chars and things look like and then someone makes a movie of it. It's almost always a disappointment and kind of disturbing.

So I wouldn't want to see a lot of artwork added. Maybe some simple things for the initial page would be nice.

Why can't we just keep to the stuff people add in game?

I'm happy with the fact Cantr's pages don't take two minutes to load up because it's not full of pictures.

I like any artwork addition (I've been tempted to do some myself, but I hardly get time to get around to the canvas of my partner I've been working on almost a year now...) But I agree, the text allows players to develop their own images.

Artwork shouldn't be added to build menus etc I don't think, but is certainly very welcome by me in character

Artwork is a good idea, but I've never really seen art that didn't annoy me.
The worst artwork in Cantr is all of those 'portraits' in the KDS region, all copyright infringements.
Anything else always has something too OOC for me, like perhaps a sun or clothes that don't exist.

Ok, fair enough, Art within IC limits
(maybe I was too optimistic to assume that that should be taken as read?)

Well maybe if art was too OOC on occasion.
But I've never seen IC art that I liked. Except maps.

Also if we were to do this then it would have to be original artwork. That means work that you did not someone else unless you have their express permission and the work is credited towards them and not you.

I remember when I joined there was a message looking for artists. I saved it for a while after removing all the others but eventually I deleted it too because I realized it must have been ages old. It would be cool to do something to help out Cantr and maybe this would be my way. I'm just so damn lazy. I do one scetch and if no one is there kicking me to continue, I just forget about it and continue lazying around. But in a few weeks I'll be done with the exams and after that I have about two months with nothing special to do unless I get a training job. Actually I have many ideas of what certain places on Cantr look like.

Didn't JoJo start out as an artist before he turned into making visas? :)

Maybe ASCII art might be cool... Might cut down load times a bit.
