Okay, you go ahead and call it that and every person who speaks English will automatically assume that you don't know what you're talking about because you don't use the correct terms for what you're passionate about.
I'm afraid that I do not really consider the things that people call rap and hip hop today rap and hip hop. It's more techno pop, if you ask me. And of course, the companies don't produce skill, they produce the guys who will sell albums.
Calling that music "Rap music" is corrupting a term anyhow. Rap means to talk, and the reason the music was called rap was because the people were not in fact singing but rhyming to a backbeat. And so once one adds actuall singing into the equation, it ceases to be rap.
Well, I'm afraid since you don't understand what classical means in music terms that I can't really respect your opinion on other definitions of genre and corruption of terms.

However, I think we can both agree that the rap and hip-hop genres of music (whether you're talking about the original street rap or the classic hip hop) are on the same continuum with their predecessors in beatbox, doo-wop, jazz... all the way back to slave spirituals-- it's all on that same continuum of black folk music embodying spontaneous creative expression with whatever materials are at hand.
I'm not sure that the commercialization of these types of music has corrupted them, but it has definitely changed them. In some cases, as in rap, it's changed them into something I like. In the case of beatbox, not so much.Your point about the necessity of selling out is well understood-- I am certainly not one to complain about any artist gaining money for their talent. I decided when I was fifteen to prostitute my writing if it was at all possible, and that's what I do now. There's enough of what I love in being a word whore to keep me doing it, and I suspect it's the same for music whores as well.
Oh, and if you've never heard of scientology, be glad. Don't bother to google it. It's a cult.
