Personal Storage
*prepares for onslaught of forumers*
This will cause lots of problems. People will detest it at first if it's implemented, like all necessary implementations.
People should not be able to hold raw resources in their hands, or much tools and whatnot.
I'd like to see personal storage devices like backpacks, utility belts, simple bags, boxes, crates... made out of things like hide, leather, cloth, fur, etc.
This will really benefit Cantr in the future.
More use for buildings, for one.

I'd like to see this. Possibly not INSTEAD of the current system--maybe have people only be able to hold the full xxxxx grams (pre-edited because I KNOW some overzealous CD member would go "OMG YOU CAN'T SAY THAT NEWSPAWNS WOULD FIND OUT!" and edit it) if they had a backpack or something, and half of that otherwise.
I'm not dead; I'm dormant.

The're not naked, the're wearing nothing worht mentioning. Its a Cantr fashion statement!

Something should be added but the something shouldn't be terribly hard to make. Add in willows, they should be growing in most places, then you can make baskets. And bulrushes in the coast locations. You have two hands so you could carry two things that don't have straps or loops. Clothes could come with pockets. You could sew pouches, also out of raw hide. And resources shouldn't be totally uncarriable, I think you could carry a day's meal of rice or potato in your hand.

In principle, I agree. However.... if a character can only hold a very limited amount, even with a backpack or some type of carrying device, think of how time consuming it will be just to add resouces to a larger project. Pick a few handfuls up from here, bring it to there, up from here and back to there. And so on......

A crate with dynamic naming would revolutionize boat travel and organization. A small lock on "Healing Foods", a galleon being able to have addressed recipients with a town's supply of iron, the personal effects of a Ranger being taken back to his wife, etc etc. If we could stack them, make it like a draggable object. Or add a small pushcart to make it a one man job. My business tycoon char would love that.

If my character has a pouch with 10 days worth of food in it, then I'd like to be able to hand the entire thing over to someone else, so I think having bags just add to your overall capacity would be missing the point. If such bags and packs were easy enough to make with common enough materials, then I'd like the amount a person can carry normally reduced, but not as far as a couple of handfuls, because that would get pointlessly awkward.

I don't like this idea.
It's imposing real world perceptions on Cantr's workings, finding an OOC solution to an in game detail. It's not even a problem. There's nothing in the game that is being hurt by the way it currently works.
I have a character who's working on a physics book for cantr, based on cantr physics, not real ones. Everything has a sense to it, works in a regular and predictible manner, so why change it just because it bugs you OOCly that the naked guy has 3 iron shields and is firing a bow at you while holding sand?
I'd rather be able to name animals that see this happen.

Reality was never my strong point.

It's obvious Nick doesn't play games like Unreal Tournament, or Diablo... you run around with weapons, armour, ammo galore... where do you hold it all? Hell? In a mystical pouch of nothingness?
I like the idea, to an extent. I do feel it is unrealistic, but I'm not up for changing it. It doesn't cause problems the way it is now. But think about IF the system is implemented. Do you know how grouchy some people will become, when they have to look inside each thing they carry (Each back, each backpack, each pouch, whatever) to find what they're looking for? It'll be just as annoying as those that look inside every envelope trying to find a pariticular note.
As well, didn't you say yourself, Nick, at another suggestion. "No, Programming as more important things to do." - Well, they do
But I'm not going to speak for them, like you boldly did, sir.

With Diablo, isn;t there a limit? The size of your pack. At least there is in Diablo (the original game), and I haven't got into Diablo 2 yet. I love Diablo too much...

Yes. But whether I'me grouchy (or surly) seems to have very little impact on anyone. I seem to have been sidelined in the group of people who's opinions don't seem to matter. No matter how much I explain my point, it is inevitably the person I oppose who gets their way.
So why don't we just implement this, and put me a step closer to the brink? Cantr is a series of negative changes at the moment. By negative, I mean they make life harder for the character, instead of easier. Cantr is a lot less fun now than it was, and everyone is steadfastly refusing to admit that the changes may be at fault.[/rant]
Anyway, I think I've made my point. Although maybe, thinking about it, I am not clear enough? Because nobody seems to understand what I'mk saying...

This explains it all. But might be as well that Cantrians have pouches like kangaroos. Only that they must be pretty damn big pouches when some people might have up to five shields!

I would like to see bags or backpacks, baskets, etc., as a means of organization, not necessarily encumberance control. Basically, they could serve one or two key purposes:
1) If you are carrying a food item and you want to not auto-eat it, you put it inside the bag. This allows you to eat the food in your hands, saving the rest for other purposes (perhaps it's a trade item, or perhaps it's a dual-purpose food item, or a raw good to make something else).
2) It would be extra-spiffy to be able to collect the things you need for a project into one basket and have a single button to "use basket contents in a project" that would apply all the materials in the basket (up to the amount needed for the project) to an existing project with one click of a mouse button instead of the 4 or 5 it takes now. This is especially useful when you have a project with multiple types of materials.
