Animals in real life prefer to attack loners and weak people. Weakness can already be determined ingame by wounds and tiredness, and maybe if newspawns and old people are considered weaker than the average then the animals might prefer to prey on the high and low end of the people list.
How about loneliness then? You could say one is lonely if they don't interract with people. But if it was just about talking in public or private, someone could post nonsense just to protect himself. And besides all the shouting might disturb the lions. But how about giving the protection to the receiver instead? If you talk to someone, the listener has a lesser chance of being attacked by animals because you're moving around them.
Also if a person was alone in a location, animals could show more courage even if their population is low. This would encourage people to travel in groups.
Animals should avoid large communities and travel away from big cities, ending up procreating on the abbandoned regions and turning travelling across the wilds into an adventure. Currently it seems the travelling is quite random and the only way to get rid of animals is through hunting and luck. But wise animals would probably leave if they're being shot.
Though it's easier for the characters in dangerous regions now that the animals aren't attacking so often, maybe they could be a liiittle bit more active? So that people wouldn't be lulled into feeling of false safety. I don't remember seeing an animal attack in ages. Are you sure it's working?

This is already programmed! ...Well, not really.
See. If a location has 50 people, and 50 animals, each animal will attack one person. Well, okay, probably not, but an EXAMPLE.
Now, if a location has 10 people, and 50 animals, five animals will attack one person.
Now, if a location has 1 person, and 50 animals, fifty animals will attack one person.
The less there are in people, the greater the chance they are attacked.
But, this is just a best case scenario. I very much know what you're getting at, but I just can't support it. Not unless animals are smart enough to be domesticated, do I think they should be smart enough to coordinate attacks on a sore loser... I mean... loner...
