Black marks on K Isle
There is none, and it's handy for sea travelling also you should be able to see a town in your line of sight. And also consistensy, if its in one place why isn't it in another.

I thought dots represented cities and towns (as opposed to locations). There used to be some on K-island, IIRC...
There are no sizeable settlements on Burgeo.
What I want to know (and this is an interface thing and should be allowed to be told on the forum) is whether the dots represent a certain number of buildings and/or people; do different-sized city-dots represent different-sized cities?

I'm not dead; I'm dormant.

I think you're overestimating the complexity of the map picture.
My guess is that when the map file was made, they didn't have locations for all of the unpopulated islands. So they didn't have anywhere to put the dots. When they created the New Lands Department and started to make locations and resources and whatnot, I imagine they didn't have the time to redo the Cantr map, as I hear it's gigantic.

I remember hearing that the earlier places have dots because....just because, lol. But Nonirowk and the newly discovered islands don't because something about not wanting to do it...or some change....or make your own town....i really don't know why they didn't put the dots...but its not because there aren't enough people or buildings.

Well I think they should because it helps with se travelling. For example one of my characters was travelling towards kirinn the other day can't see exactly where he is headed but the harbour comes up on the location page, I didn't want to dock at the harbour though so he needed to travel further towards Kirinn, hard when you can't see where it is.

I'll consider having them added to all locations automatically, but might decide against it, as according to the roadmap locations will eventually disappear. Perhaps a black mark for each landmark will be the solution.
*buzzer sound* No, don't like the sound of that one.
You could communicate messages from afar by making landmarks.

Without the black dots it's impossible for a ship to see how far away they are from docking. With some of the slower ships this can make quite a difference in time spent on the docking procedure.
Someone steering a ship should be able to see the port they are pulling into and adjust the ships docking aproach accordingly. Without the black dots, if you start docking you could be 90% or 10% away from the dock with no way of telling.

Hmm, yes, I can see the uses of the dots and why it's fair enough to have them. What I will definitely not do, however, is drawing all the dots for those locations where this has not been done yet. This is a lot of work and does not fit well with the roadmap.
The landmarks are eventually the replacement of locations once the roadmap is further progressing, so that's why I suggested them.
I fail to see how you can communicate with them. So you can add a black dot to a map - what would you be communicating?
But perhaps the black dots should appear for any building or something. That would make it possible to extent it further down the roadmap ...

Well you could create a signal by making a landmark almost finished, and then as soon as you want to send the signal, just finish the project and anyone within sight will see the new dot.
Or hell, even a lower tech way would do. You could spell out words with dots. Or a Cantrian morse code.

No, because currently you can only build those marks in the town square of locations, so you can't space them out more precisely ... You can either have (a) landmark(s) on a location or not, so either a black dot or not ...
Cookie Monster wrote:So that wasn't the idea before now? How were you going to stop people getting lost.
I had idea that were not visual. Like, you can walk in any random direction and once you are within the vicinity of a landmark, you automatically stop walking, so once you know the direction roughly - using a map etc. - you'd find a location. Besides, all roads/paths etc. won't disappear, so you can just follow a road until you hit a landmark ... no black dots needed there
