Typo hunting in Cantr

Postby SekoETC » Tue May 17, 2005 10:07 pm

I don't know where a topic like this should actually be put and do the maintainers even want to see such when they have many better things to mind, but since I don't have better things to do at the moment, thinking why not search for some spelling errors I so often complain about.

"There are 20 days in a year, 8 hours in a day, 36 minutes in a hour". This text appears below the clock on every page. H is a silent consonant in the word hour, so the correct article is an.

"Create an envelop" (The title for the envelope button.) An envelope ends with an e. Not to be mistaken with the verb "to envelop", which doesn't have a vovel in the end.

From the introduction text:

Second paragraph.

"-you can try to play the worlds most famous politician-" - Worlds is a plural. There should be a possessive suffix: world's.

"most wealthy entrepreneur" - The correct form would be "wealthiest".

Third paragraph.

"The game is designed for players who have more on their agenda then just gaming." - than

"- they will give you enough to do for a full-time job as a player!" - Just an article missing.

Ok I got bored already. But is this helpful or just annoying?

Nothing we can do about this. The programming automatically puts a 's' at the end each animal when there is more than one. We are aware of this but something like that I am told is very complicated to program and at this moment a waste of time.

Hmmm..... LiveJournal's style 1 (and style 2, but I don't know that one that well) system had an algorithm for pluralizing words in English, and that part's open source. Perhaps the programming dept. can borrow some code for making plurals.

Only if you're a snotty Brit. Oh surprise, what do we have?

Finding typos in cantr isn't annoying, but people bickering over variations of a word which is spelt right in what region and yet not another, is irritating. :x

As Nick would say, "Why it's got to be the hundreth time...."

"Fourties" should be "forties," unless the extra "U" is a Brit thing . . . but I doubt that, because I have looked through four online dictionaries and they all say "fourties" is incorrect, and they usually mention something if there's a different foreign spelling.

"Embroided" on the clothing list is also incorrect.

There's a lot of apostrophes and punctuation missing all over the place, if anything can be done about that. One example: clothing descriptions frequently say "wearers" instead of the possessive "wearer's."

aww. 'Racoon' and 'Spinage' are just good ol cantr classics, things most of us oldbies are so used to... Why make Cantr grammatically correct? :) Its little things like this that are so widely accepted by players in the game that makes it fun to have a laugh or two.
Little errors that are just fun to poke fun at... Like how hard it was to control and regulate all the animals' sex drives... Err, reproductive rates. *cough* It was a recurring problem. ;)
