The Profiteering of Sex

Postby rklenseth » Tue May 17, 2005 2:54 am

I was wondering if this had actually been done yet. I mean whorehouses, prostitutes, pimps, etc.... To see if this can work in an established society with an established currency, I have a character that is about to start such a thing. Especially since I have heard all of the complaints about sex recently in Cantr this could lead to some exciting times.

My inspiration for this comes from Deadwood. If you haven't seen this show yet, Deadwood is a western where two of the main characters are essentially pimps. Sweargen of the Gem and Tolliver of Bella Union. I think this is something that hasn't really been seen in Cantr yet or effectively established. I could be wrong considering I haven't been playing for a good many months.

This does exist in Drojf, but I'm not sure how profitable it is. :)

There have been a number of prostitute chars in Cantr and at least one establishment. As I said in another thread the prostitutes in Cantr bear zero resemblence to actual prostitutes as far as I can tell.

I hope you noticed that in Deadwood the women are little more than forced sex slaves. In fact they recently got a batch of Chinese forced sex slaves.

They aren't cheery or sex-loving or fun. They get beaten by their customers and pimps. Three were recently murdered by a customer. Several of them have mentioned that they were raped repeatedly as children which is, in fact, the typical experience of rl prostitutes now and in the old west.

They aren't delivering sexy, satisfying sexual services either. It's in and out, hurry up, get out of here buddy.

So, if you're going to do it and you find some willing whore chars I hope that all of you will try to make it as realistically grim and horrific as it should be.

I am all for realistic. I just want to see if it can work and be role played well. It is one element of Cantr society that seems to be absent.

Heart of Gold much, RKL?

Oh and I just spent about half an hour attempting to make a spoof of your second sig banner...replacing River with Cats from All Your Base and "you can't stop the signal" with "we get signal!"

Then I realized that joke got old in 2001 and stopped.

It's very hard to come up with a whore house that is realistic as for some reason in the cantarian societies, everyone seems to already have this built in morality that enslaving someone is wrong. When someone says "I was raped." Everyone in any cantr town says ":O she was raped. Omg" When realistically, noone should have any concept of whether rape is in or out, yet since it hasn't even becme common enough to be looked at. When I say common, i mean, more than twice in a town. It's just already a bad thing, when considered by most characters due to their players. I say to you, good luck when aiming for realisitic. About the only type of whore you'll get, is a volunteer one.
I hate people.

there will never be realistic prostitution in Cantr - there's a lack of demand, and it's probably faster and easier to leave the 'depths of Cantr socity (which basically just means being a newspawn with nothing..) so there's less incentive for a character to enter prostitution for IC reasons, unless they happen to decide their character is pre-disposed to wanting to be a prossie for some reason - You'll probably find your hos will spend more time making clothes and working on a smelter or whatever, than plying their trade...
Whoever you vote for.

The government wins.

And who says that in Cantr it should be grim and horrific? Or realistic? It is interesting that on one hand there is frequent complaining about the use of RL words, names, and definitions of items, as well as religious similarities or even blatant knockoffs of various concepts, yet on the other hand there is a strong moralistic call for prostitution to be presented as Real Life as possible, apparently so that we all can be very clear that it is a bad, bad thing.

Determining whether things in Cantr should reflect rl or not is always a difficult choice. It's kind of a schizophrenic place because of that.

I, personally, detest prostitution in rl because I know that virtually all women become prostitutes because of a combination of childhood sexual trauma and drug adiction. It's not a pretty or sexy or glamorous life, even in the "high class" range. Granted, some women manage to find situations where they can at least make good money (if they're pretty enough) but most sell themselves for next to nothing and experience abuse on a daily basis. An emotionally healthy woman doesn't let multiple strangers climb on top of her because they are willing to hand her some cash.

It has nothing to do with being moralistic in terms of disapproving of sexual activity. It has to do with caring about the sexual exploitation of women who never had a chance to make up their minds about what to do with their lives and their bodies because their traumatic backgrounds and/or chemical imbalances lead them into a life of danger and degredation.

I agree that realities can be quite different in Cantr and prostitutes don't have to be portrayed along rl lines. I just hate to see what is, in rl, a tragedy for countless women turned into something fun and positive in Cantr. I think it's very telling that all the whores so far (that I know of) have been female.

With all the sex in cantr recently i think we're just going through our own Sexual Revolution 1960's style, hey who knows, maybe Hash 'n' LSD'll be implemented soon... then i could start up my own Hippy movement :D

Hooray for Hippys!

This has got to be the hundredth thing you've blamed on childhood sexual trauma.
