I suspect your host doesn't accept hotlinked images and automatically bumps users back to the page they came from (the "Refferrer").

I found if I cut & paste the image link it works - but not if I click.

seeing as I block all cookies by default, that's probably why it works for me. I block the cookies storing refferal data, or perhaps as I opened it in a fresh tab
