I don't think you're supposed to know. I mean how would you find out you were good at maths in real life other than by doing maths? You can't.
One of my established chars found out they were shite @ their job, but they simply took a different role within the organisation. Live with it.

Well I am a little bit mad at the skills as of now.
I have a friend that plays, and he had an iron shield. He was running around with a notoriously violent group (as in he and the group were no strangers to blocking and attacking). But after the skills were implimented, he tried to escape the said group. He told me he blocked something like 4% max. He died in four shots. I personally think that is bullcrap.
I can see the need to make skills in alot of things, but maybe we shouldn't have put a skill in blocking. How in the hell would you increase that, aside from letting everyone with a weapon above a fist trounce him.
Not to mention he didn't even know he sucked in blocking until it mattered.

So they used to be great at it, and then one day they woke up and could barely function? Just curious, did you roleplay out their reaction to that? They think they'd been hit by a sudden debilitating disease or what?
Players know about skills, but characters don't...I'm wondering what the proper reaction to that would be. Just up and changing a profession a character like and was good at with no in-game reason as to why seems almost OOC.
As for being gifted, well, that sounds like exactly what the skill system already does, though it seems like it's more common to be cursed. (Which would make what used to be normal characters "skilled" by comparison, I guess, though that may not be what you had in mind...)

I must disagree, characters should be able to know what they are good at as well. I know that I am good at some things and suck at others and I play accordingly.
Personally I think lacking skills you once had could be explained as a long term effect of the amnesia we all experienced not too long ago...

something like
You see a woman in her thirties fumble with a needle and thread and prick herself
or
You see a man in his twenties miss and bring the hammer down on his thumb
and
You see a man in his twenties forget that he's working with molten metal and try to pick up the steel from the smelting furnace with his hands

Ya, when I proposed this in a skills thread people had fits where they ran around screaming, "Leveling! Nooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!"
I think a great skill would be if some people could see further (farther?) than others. When they look at their maps they would get a bigger and maybe more detailed version. That would be cool and useful, especially for sailors.
And maybe some people could see down the roads. They would make good lookouts.
OH! And some people could have sharper hearing where they sometimes pick up conversations from inside buildings.
