General Question

Postby Yo_Yo » Wed May 11, 2005 3:59 am

Now... Since this won't be happening for a long time (assuming my character does get some foothold and does this) would I be in breach. Heres the issue.

I made a character Lately. He has the name of one of the legendary three musketeers. I plan on him acting the way he would in the novel, aside from me protecting the king and whatnot (I've always wanted to pursue a religious character, i finally got the urge). Now in the novels, he eventually creates a secret order call the Jesuits (sorry if I spelled that wrong). Now, if my character had reason in game to create a secret society, would he be alowed to name it that?

And if need be, I can prove my character will be (as soon as he aquires some kind of religious texts and whatnot, so he can believe in a higher form) different from the Novel. I don't need attacks, just answers.

Why not be more creative, Yo Yo? Why do they have to be called the Jesuits? Using that name and the name you've given your char just puts you in a preconceived role. You could do the exact same rp you plan to do without using the uncreative names and everyone you meet will find him more interesting.

Agreed.
Be original. I've never felt the urge to name my character or organisation after something.
And I hate when I see it done.

Why do you think I do it Nick?

And I want to do it that way to see if anyone notices. Anyone that might not read this forum.

Anyone who actually catches the allusion to the novel will just think you are unable to come up with something original. Those who don't won't really care.

I name my charactes from random people in the United States Census. Is that a breech?

I often use http://www.20000-names.com/ - been going through the Slavic girl names recently... I don't always bother, but they seem to sound more authentic when I nick them from real names (although - some of those Yiddish names - sheesh...)

If I saw 'Jesuits' In game, I'd be bit *eyebrow raised* - a bit like with Jesus, who's wandering around somewhere...

I think Mr Dumas has been taking some liberties with the facts. The The Society of Jesus(Jesuit Order) was founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540. I believe the Three Musketeers was set some time after this event. Perhaps the musketeer in questing created a secret order of Jesuits.

In any event, given the Jesuits vow of personal obediance to the Pope, go ahead and play the character. I'll have to play one and declare himself pope...
