Um...IRL, timber would be wood in it's rawest form...tree trunks and such (I think).
In cantr, timber is a resource that likely exists somewhere, but wood is the common and important resource...as far as I know, timber is only usable to make the log cabin.
Timber was also added to the game relatively recently, whereas wood has most likely been around since the beginning.

Wrong, I'm afraid.
TImber is prepared wood. The log cabin should really use raw wood, and other wood buildings the timber. Timber is the same as lumber - wood prepared for use, not raw wood.
For sources:

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=lumber
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timber
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumber
If the log cabin is using timber, something is highly wrong.
Thankfully nobody noticed my typo.

Nope. Timber is the name used at all points of the process except usually the most highly processed products. Your diningroom table is not made of timber, it's made of wood. But yes, the beams in your roof are timber as are the beams in a wooden ship. The latter are indeed referred to as "timbers".
Nonetheless, when a newly logged tree, still with its branches attached, is about to fall on your head, people don't yell "Wood!" They yell "Timber!"
Oh, and a log cabin is made of... logs.

Timber, as defined in Cantr, is a log. Just a big log, a cut down tree.
Wood, as defined in Cantr, are pieces of the tree, or prepared pieces of a cut down tree.
Timber is used for only the log cabin, and it does exist as a resource. Timber was originally going to be "logs" made from prepared wood...
But, how would we explain that you need to glue together 1000 grams of wood to make a log... really? That's just backwards.

Really? When? More importantly, where? Aside from it's mention in log cabins?

Backwards, but makes a kind of sense, especially in cantr.
Why not make a timber a semi finished item, taking 500 wood and the adze and whatnot to make one. Then the log cabin could take the appropriate number of timbers to build, and everyone could be happy?
That would mean that the lower classes in the forests would have cottages, while the upper classes would have log cabins, as they can make the adzes required.
It's not like when you gather wood in real life, you gather it in individual grams. You grab chunks. I'd assume that most projects in cantr have the wood and time requirements to allow the builder to alter the wood to the needs of the project figured into it. By making timber a semifinished project, you're breaking down how and what they're doing to the wood they've gathered, not gluing it back together with and adze.
Reality was never my strong point.
