private messages and actions

Postby Peter » Sat May 07, 2005 7:25 pm

This is what my eye catched lately:

you say: *hits Jim*
--> everyone can see it, everyone knows it, everyone acts upon it

you say to Jim: *hits Jim*
--> noone saw it, noone knows it, but everyone should have seen it

I talked to someone from PD about it, he told me to post it at suggestions. What is the solution for this. Because if I was Jim's friend I would have responded on the first action, and I can't respond on the second action. Which is not fair.

This happens (imagination here though):
Bella says: *looks at Peter and Jim*
You say to Jim: *kisses Jim*
Jim says: Peter kissed me *looks embaressed*
Bella says: No Jim, he didn't, I was watching both of you

What I mean is, this really messes things up.

Can anyone tell me how to handle in these situations?
Not that good.

Or people cybering out in front of everyone, with whispers.
I thought that the RP side of sex in Cantr was what made it okay. Ambition for love is a driving source of society.
But I now believe that this is far outweighed by the fact that some people just come to Cantr to cyber.
IMO, Cantrian sex should be disallowed.

Yes, I agree that any outwardly visible action should be 'said aloud' rather than whispered.

I'm a little puzzled as to what makes this a suggestion, though. I would have thought GD.

Someone's not getting any...

I think the problem is actions, not just affections, are being said privatey.

Best thing I can say would be to do as bowser does. Someone whispers something you don't like, ignore them or shoot them, or lock them up.

Well I'm guessing he's "suggesting" it be outlawed.

It looks more like he said:

Which would be more like general support, since he's asking for suggestions instead of making a suggestion of something to be added to the game...

Maybe we should be nitpicking at said PD member, instead of the newish player with imperfect english.
He's just following instructions. :D

well thank you for defending me Nick...

what is GD?

I know I should learn to write english better, but hey, I'm trying

kisses we're just an example, could be anything like shaking hands

I'd like a solution for the game, either my thoughts about it have to change, or the rp-ing has to change or ?? I don't know

the pd-er will probably make himself known :)

and please don't talk negative about me. I asked a fair question.

No problem.

The 'General Discussion' forum.

It's a second language, and I'm sure you speak english better than the majority of people here speak a second language.

the pd-er will probably make himself known :)

After being criticized? Doubtfully.

and please don't talk negative about me. I asked a fair question.

My comment wasn't meant in a negative way, I was just reminding Agar that you're probably not the best person to complain at.

I don't understand the *hits Jim* part of the question because we have a hitting function so if you don't use it you haven't hit anyone. If someone pretends to hit by saying *hits Jim* they are breaking the rules.

Now if someone says *kisses Jim* you must go with the roleplay whether it is public or whispered. Of course Jim can respond however he chooses. He can whisper, "Cut it out, leave me alone. *walks away* or he can shout outloud, "Get off me! Stop trying to kiss me!"

If you kiss Jim outloud and Bella is watching then she saw the kiss. If she says she didn't she might be lying or maybe crazy or whatever but she saw it. If you kiss Jim in a whisper then Bella wouldn't really know one way or another. There are a few awkward rp situations around whispering like this but I think you'll find that most people play around them pretty well.

This is similar to the Inappropriate Rape discussion. If someone says *I'm raping you* (in char, of course) do you have to play along? Rape is, in my opinion, the most extreme example but the Cantr physics of rp extend to many circumstances.

Sometimes people have two separate but simultaneous lives going on in whisper and outloud. They might be making love in a whisper while conducting a business deal outloud. I don't like this and think it's wrong and bad rp.

Edit: Sorry, I actually didn't see the poll part so I misunderstood the question but, whatever. Anyway, I voted no because I would rather chars keep a lot of their actions private. I have too much talk to read already.

Well..... I have an issue with the whole concept of allowing and not allowing when it comes to private conversations. Personally.... I believe that if you are roleplaying an interaction privately with another person, then it is between the two of you what is acceptable or not acceptable. Now clearly if you decide to pull the public in on it you must accept the repercussions.

I admit that I am guilty of using actions in private. But much of the time it would be too awkward and disruptive to the flow to split up the actions and the words of a conversation. So I don't. And I'm not sure that others would really appreciate it anyway.

I voted 'disagree' but I really don't care. I think if it's a small action like, *pats Jim on the back* or *smiles* then it wouldn't matter if it were private or not, as those are things that the public wouldn't really need to see. If it's a bigger thing like, *kicks a tree in his anger* or something like that, it couldn't hurt to say it out loud, but then again, it's not a huge deal in my opinion.

yeah I thought I put a option "I don't care" there too, but it doesn't seem to show up...

I personally try to keep things like hugging, kissing, large visible actions public. As well as laughing. Facial expressions, and glances, tend to be whispered if the character is talking privately to another.
