something weird going on with names

Postby Lumin » Mon Jan 24, 2005 4:02 am

I don't know if it's a bug or if I somehow managed to screw something up, but I've named two people in a row and had the html do some bizarre things. It's like the link to their description is open at the end, and I'm seeing the things people say (and sometimes a couple of events before it) as one long orange link attached to their names.

The box the name would usually be typed in says, "probable thief ( <INPUT TYPE=submit CLASS=button_charmenu VALUE=Change></FORM><BR>If you want to give a character a name, but would still like to get the description, you can include<BR><BR><CANTR CHARDESC><BR><BR>For example:<br><i>John Hopkins (<CANTR CHARDESC>)</i><br>could look like<br><i>John Hopkins (a man in his twenties).</i><BR></TD></TR><TR><TD ALIGN=center><BR><BR><A HREF="

Which obviously isn't what it's supposed to say, but if I try to change it I get an error message, "You can't change a name to nothing."

i think if you don't close the brackets on <CANTR CHARDESC>, it messes stuff up. unfortunately i don't know how to fix it.

PM me with your character's name and the name of the one(s) you're trying to name.

Kroner is right. I didn't close the bracket on a (<CANTR CHARDESC>) and the same thing happenened. The character I named has left town now, so I forgot about it. I think it was the ">" not the ")" I missed out, but , anyway, I had to look at the day report to see it as I'd typed it. All kinds of weird stuff came up in the box.

Oddest of all, the "CHANGE" button for that character's name disappeared, so whenever I tried to change it (which was quite a few times) i found all I could do was return to the previous page.

Shall I send in a PM, too?

Yes, you should.

And it cannot have been a normal round bracket (), because that would have no effect on the game. So yes, it was the >.

You can mail programming@cantr.net with a request to repair it. Give as much info about the name you entered as possible, so that it is easy for us to find.

I just noticed that most of these cases are because people give way too long descriptions. You can't write half a note in a characters name ;) ...
