Neil Gaiman / Dave McKean

Postby Pirate Lass » Sat Apr 30, 2005 1:10 pm

Ok so I am a huge fan of anything Gaiman and of course Dave McKean's artwork. The two pretty much go hand in hand.

Has anyone seen the trailers for Mirrormask? I am rather looking forward to seeing this movie. I think that with only a $4 million budget they did exceptionally well portraying McKean's vivid imagination on screen.

Seeing this gives me hope that one day there might be just some form of the "Sandman" series put to film.

That would be awesome... although, I'm a little afraid that putting Sandman into some other medium would only be a let down.

If anything, it would need to be a miniseries, not a movie.

PS: Just went to the site. It looks like it has a lot of potential. :D

I love Sandman and those books I've read, Neverwhere, Stardust and Coraline. I have American Gods at home but I've been too busy playing Cantr to read much of anything. I used to read hundreds of books a year in the old days, now only a few.

It would be highly interesting to see who they might cast as the Endless - that could go frightfully wrong or incredibly good.

Of course, Tori Amos would have to be on the soundtrack. :)

Mm... casting for the endless... all I know is that they would have to be heavily digitally altered... Dream's eyes alone... well, you get the idea.

And you'd have to find a really good, really androgenous actor to play Desire... I can't think of anyone off the top of my head.

If Desire is asian, get Gackt. I don't know if he can act, though.

Desire can be just about anything....he/she changes constantly. The same with Dream, and Delerium.

Death remains constant, always kicks ass. :P Especially when she's pissed off at Dream.

Personally I think "Season of Mists" would be the most probable choice. Not so much back or intertwined storyline as some of the others (though EVERYTHING connects in some form). That was the first that I read and it did a pretty good job of explaining the basics to newcomers. Not to mention an interesting storyline with an old love, interesting characters, and a battle in hell.

That's the trouble that a movie would run into... Sandman doesn't follow the same plotline as other stories do. It isn't a quest, well, not for Dream at least. And the beauty of the series is how everything interacts and connects.

My favorite storyline is Lucifer giving up the key to Hell to Dream and then starting his own nightclub on earth. And then all the deities and powers of the universe come a-knocking for the key...

Neil Gaiman's graphic novel (aka comic book) series entitled: Sandman.

It is hands down one of my favorite series of all time. It's a DC comic that actually starts out in the same "world" as superman and batman, etc... but quickly the series moves away from that and becomes a mythology unto its own.

The story revolves around Dream. One of the seven Endless, who are all siblings. (Destiny, Death, Dream, Desire, Despair, Delirium (used to be Delight), and then well... the last one went away for a bit... you'll have to read to find out.) The comic talks about all his interactions within our world and without, and plays upon a lot of the mythologies that already exist.

Some of my favorite bits are when re-tell old fairy tales in a non-sugar coated way. Much closer to the old folk tales than the modern version of things, it's amazing how PC things get over the centuries.

Agreed. Although my favorite "re-telling" of how things happened was William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and the subsequent performance for all the Fae folk. Funny, yet sad, and scary (Puck) all at the same time...
