What's so special about bread?

Postby Lumin » Thu Apr 28, 2005 1:40 pm

Okay, maybe it's a minor issue, but it's something I've never understood. I see bakeries all over the place, but from what I've seen it takes an awful lot of effort to make bread, and in the end it's still not quite as good as carrots, which are just yanked right up out of the ground with no tools at all. I suppose in places where carrots weren't available it would make sense...if not for the presence of meat.

Granted, none of my characters have ever actually made bread, but with the work required they haven't wanted to. Is there some benefit here that I'm missing completely?

...and while we're on the subject of food, I might as well ask this, too: What's the deal with corn? Seriously, you can eat raw rice and raw potatoes, but not fresh, delicious corn? In real life, I'd take that over the first two anyday, as it's the only one that actually tastes like something a person might want to eat.

There was a time when meat wasn't available to be cooked, as animals weren't huntable nor did they exist up until about (a year ago?) But I believe the ability to make bread has been around for much much much longer than that. :)

In places where other food exists, its merely something that characters experiment with. RP value, I would think. "What are you doing?" "Going to the bakery to get some bread."

Bread = Xiria town with no running to the hills.
And I also wonder the corn thing. I've heard that corn's nutritional value is pretty bad in real life but people use it for food commonly in poor places because it's easy to prepare. Inkas or something used to just chew them up and spit them in a pot to make a porridge.

There are some places like Cantr City where that use to be the sole diet because there weren't any other foods around.

If you've got the infrastructure in place (grain grinder and oven) and the appropriate raw materials, bread's not too bad to make, especially if you're equipping someone to go travelling (the lighter your food, the more room for other stuff). Obviously, it depends on the local resources - I could certainly see it as a useful alternative in an area where the animals have been hunted out either due to too many hunters or in order to minimise the dangers of attack while outside.

I haven't figured out the value of pancakes though!

You still eat less bread than carrots. Carrots is about 40 grams a day while bread is around 20 grams. Unless that has changed.

Very minor, but, yeah, those exact values probably shouldn't be posted...

I disagree. This censorship is really getting out of hand.

hey - it annoyed me - some people haven't come across bread - give us a chance to work things like that out in game... Carrots and stuff, ok, well... everyone knows how much of that's eaten - but some of us are still finding things out, and don't want to be told things... spoils it I think

There isn't much incentive, most places, to actually bake anything.

I've seen cookies and pizza in game, but nobody bothers to make them anymore.
