Salted meat
Yes, it's been discussed before, even in Yahoo groups.
I still want it.
Any method of salting meat or fish needs something to store it in, often called a salt keg. Salt keg machine now please?
The only problem I see is that you don't have to mind salted meat the same way you'd mind a smelter. Other machines, you have to do work on. Salt Keg, you add stuff and let sit. Weeks late, IRL, you pull stuff out and eat it. Is there a way to make a project like that?

I like this but not just Salting
Preservation by
1) Salting
2) Smoking
3) Pickling
4) Freezing
5) Air removal - (vacuum packing and aspic)
6) Canning
7) Alcohol
Sugar
9) Air Drying
All good methods of preserving the life of food, many of which just require existing materials and can use primitive techniques
I'd be happy to talk to the RD about what is required in all cases
Of course we also need food decay and related food poisioning

Yes! Yes! Yes!
Curing and smoking wold definitely add flavor to the game.
Get it! I said flavor! Oh man, I don't know how I come up with 'em, it's a gift I guess.
This would definietly give a certain creative chef my character knows on K-island some more to work with.
We could start eating barbecue, brisket sandwiches if we get some bread....*begins to drool*

I should like to point out I'm not that concerned with how the meat is preserved, as long as it's a way to make raw meat edible. Salt is just one way of doing that. It would add some value back to salt besides leather making, since you can't eat it to heal anymore.

I agree. However, due to some restraints, if this were implemented, these would NOT happen:
1) You can not walk away from the project. The project MUST have someone on it to advance, it's just the way Cantr is coded.
2) Salting, and other ways to preserve it, can be implemented, however, the meat will still be edible, and the 'preserve' part will merely be the meat not dissapearing as fast as normal meat does.
With those two flaws, do you agree that it would be an acceptable thing to add? Say yes, and I'll get right on it. Mainly because:
A) Salt does need more uses
B) Meat is in abundance
C) It's realistic to not just cook meat.
What I'd add is just Salting and Smoking. I could add pickling, however, we would need to add cucumbers to the game (If they don't already exist. I don't believe so...), a way to make them pickels, yadda yadda.
Smoking the meat will need to be explained, because I don't know how it's done. Sure, it seems self explainatory, but I want to get it right.
The remainder of suggested ways would merely be for preservation, and would make the meat no longer edible, so it's not plausable. Except for sugar and alcohol. But, seeing as how we don't have alcohol, and how sugar would just be silly, I'll skip those. (Is sugar really silly? Is it used to preserve meat, and give it flavour..? If it is, then well... not only will I research, to see if you're lying, but I'd implement it if it's an actual valid idea.)

Do you mean the meat would be edible or inedible if salted uncooked?
I'm personally in favor of salting, as there are ways to prepare meat that don't require cooking, including salting and drying. Yeah, they're not what I would consider edible, but my characters in the mountains who hunt but have no forests nearby to gather wood for cooking would tend to disagree.
When you're talking about using any available food source in a situation where you may not have burnable materials, you find ways to make meat edible if you must. Look at the arctic and subarctic tribes and groups; they've been eating uncooked meat for centuries.

Yes.
Salt + Uncooked Meat + Salting Barrel = Salted Meat
Salt + Uncooked Fish + Salting Barrel = Salted Fish
Uncooked Meat + (smoking machine?) = Smoked Meat
Uncooked Fish + (smoking machine?) = Smoked Fish
Good, good?
[Edit] And to answer the above question, it would be edible. Instead of salting or smoking cooked meat, I decided that smoking or salting uncooked meat would be better. Unrealistic, I'm assuming, but better for Cantr.

Thats the basic principle and IRL the meat is uncooked before its treated.
Strictly speaking the Smoking process requires wood for the smoke
And the machine is known as "A Smoker" essentially a chamber which contains the food , through which the smoke is passed
Closer to the Salting process is the Air Drying process - which just needs air and warmth - no fire or fuel - Producing Jerky or Biltong dired meats
IRL
Salting of fish requires typically 10 days, Meat about 28 days
Air Drying requires abut 3 to 4 days
Smoking takes about a Day for Fish and 2-4 for meat
There is a weight loss typically about 10 to 30% in Drying and Smoking

The in game drying racks seem to be more like herbal flower presses.
Smokeing is simply hanging meat over a smoldering fire and keeping the smoke in a contained area. You could have several machines, Small Smokehouse, Large Smokehouse, Converted Hall Smokehouse (
), and add meat and wood and there you go. Smokehouses can be made of wood, but there's the dreaded "where's the fire go" question. Maye this can be more of a scaled up spit, where you don't need a shovel or trowel.
