The difference with the amnesia that occurred with the dynamic naming of people is this: Each character does know his or her own name and can say so. Buildings do not and cannot. Therefore it will be very difficult to distinguish one building from another.... especially in larger towns with many buildings.

And towns do not and cannot. So... therefore my character who is traveling up in the mountains from empty town to empty town..... will never be able to determine where he has been and where he is going...... and will most likely never be able to find his way out. :?

Yup, and there'd be some characters travelling, that wouldnt know the names of places anywhere.
But deal with it. It would be one day of a little bit of confusion, it would be well more than worth it. You guys are hesitant of this change, just like everyone is hesitant of all the changes. People screamed at tiredness when it was introduced, but now it's leveled out. I said when that happened, to have faith in the staff. They know what they're doing. And I was right. Same goes for this, or any other things the ProgD chooses to implement. We certainly have able men at the helm of this game.

Swymir wrote: However I would like to know how things were handled with dynamic naming. Did you use amnesia or did you make it so everyone knew who all the characters who were already in the game and only the newer characters come in as "a man in his twenties/a women in her twenties"?

EVERYONE forgot EVERYONE else's name. Yup, it was confusing as hell for a day. But we dealt with it. And now we're better off with it.

But people can point to buildings, and say the name. Not soooo difficult.

Personally, I find it stupid you can walk around towns that noone lives in, and know the name of the town.
And if you wander around the middle of nowhere without directions, is it really that unfair that you'd get lost?

You have to know the name of the building before you can say it.

My character has directions. He has a map... which would be rendered useless by the amnesia. Also..... it is not unreasonable that towns would have signs with the town name on that sign.

And in a town with people in it, there should be people who'd know the name of the building. Otherwise, it'd be an abandoned building, and someone would claim it eventually.

The maps that we've been using up until now will not be as useful anymore for travelling alone. That may give some challenges to mapmakers, but that's nothing we can't handle, right?

I tell you, they'll work fine...though for slightly messy reasons.

When you make a map, you C/P the exits list I assume.

So, assuming the road order doesn't get randomized just to kill us all, you can simply pick the n'th road...

Also it would help if the exits to a road at least stating which direction they headed in (ie. north, west, south, south-east) this would make visual maps a lot more appreciated.

Woo hoo! I'm part of the apathetic minority!

I can see the benefits either way. I agree with a lot of the stuff I bothered to read while skimming the thread. Honestly the reset will have little impact on me directly as few of my characters really travel.

I am just glad that the naming has been implemented. I can finally stop looking up the street address to my house again everytime I need to go inside! And it will certainly cut down on the confusion between The Metalworking Shop and The Seatown Metalworks building!

Either way I would be happy, but all I am saying is I wouldn't just spring the amnesia on a random date and I would really perfer it if everything already in game was left known and that new things were made unknown, but I guess I will be happy either way. Something like this won't ruin the game for me just would get me a little frustrated for a week or so.

Personally, I find it amazing that you can drive right through a town IRL ...*whoosh*... and still know the name of the place without stopping to ask anyone.

Think about that for a bit.

Well that's the case in a large metropolitan area of course, but what about those small two street towns? You're probably surprised those are even there, if you're unfamiliar with the area. I think those are representative of most of the towns in Cantr.

Bigger towns like Chicago, of course you know where you are. That would probably be the case in Cantr as well. There's IC lore all over about the big towns, so if you're paying any attention at all, you can probably figure it out when you get to Seatown or what have you.

In pretty small towns as well, there are signs... I mean I'm not sure about the REAL small towns... that shouldn't be called towns but that's how most people would know.

Correct. I've travelled through Europe by car--indeed in countries where I really can't speak the language--and there are always signs, even in hamlets. There have been route signs too in Europe since Roman times, though they doubtless did get a bit wonky during the dark and early middle ages.

You'd have to be given the knowledge somehow. You don't just automatically know where you are, no matter where you are.
