If all of this has been implemented, what about a way to point towards an exit while inside a building or vehicle? If you can point at a building, you ought to be able to point at the way out, I'd think.

man 1 says: "Where can I buy clothes?"
man 2 says: "Why, at 'Jo's Clothes', of course!"
man 2 points to a building

I don't see anything wrong with that.

Do you have any idea how much pointing would be involved in a town like Drojf? And the alienation of newspawns who, after all, arrive there every day? What are you proposing...a "department of perpetual pointing"?

I can tell you now that "numbering from the top" would take over. Street addresses would at least have been prettier.

I think an extra button should be added to the building and vehicle list, like the smiley face by character names - that gives a description (i.e: a sign) That doesn't change, even if you change what you know the name of the building by - this could be chosen when starting a building, and use the existing names when adding to existing buildings...

Well obviously, I'd think that building signs will be implemented if this is implemented fully.

Aha, well if you're saying that, then we are much closer to being on the same wavelength. I'd been preparing a proposal for building signs combined with street addresses. That would have worked.

But general amnesia without them will be a catastrophe.

For the purpose of people totally lost inside large nested building "warrens"?

I spawned a new character and he knew all of the buildings and whatnot. I'm still not sure what I think of it all.

As it has been implemented now, it really is nothing.

Amnesia would have to happen for any of this to actually have a point.

Amneisa would be chaos. Maybe keep the names the way they are and allow some way to change it so that everyone sees it the way it is. I don't know how this could be done but amneisa is definitly not the answer. Everybody would have to figure out which buildings they owned people would be running in and out stealing things. It would be horrible. All characters currently alive should not forget anything and maybe just have new characters spawn not knowing any of the places.

Amnesia wouldn't be as bad as you think...buildings aren't that hard to recognize.

It would be a terrible, chaotic mess. I just think that the situation afterwards would be worth it.

And you know, Sociologist...you don't have the slightest need to know the names of all the buildings in Drojf. Most of them the names no longer mean anything.

Was anyone around for when dynamic people names were introduced?
Yes, it was chaotic for a few days. But its worth it!

We have a test server and I did test everything, but it always happens that something is missed. You cannot test all combinations of circumstances. So, is this an error you are now still experiencing? Please report bugs to Flyspray and we'll look into it as fast as possible.

I like this a great deal. I don't give a damn about the amnesia (although all my old relic buildings will be forgotten :(:() but I do passionately think it ought not to happen until name plates are created.

A note about name plates: they should not be restricted to a single material type. They're too important to leave to the people with iron, or steel. For this we need lots of different options.

I think a little chaos would be a lot of fun. But I'm just that way.

I was thinking more of wood, which is widely enough available ... It is ok if some towns need to progress more before they can use nameplates, no? International trade is already too weak as it is, if we make everything that is important omnipresent, there's little fun to the game, I think ...

That post somehow isn't up to your usual high standards. :?

So is it "not as bad as I think" or "a terrible, chaotic mess"...which?

And I agree about meaningless names. All those Lad Empire outposts all over the place that will now become "building X" in towns occupied solely by newspawns who think Lad is a young man in his twenties. :D

Wood would probably have to do it, since...
-stone would presumably require a chisel, which takes wood.
-any kind of metal might be a good higher-end option, but not usable for most people.
-you can't really make a sign out of mud, or sand, or anything like that.

Do let the sign be made without metal tools, though. Please.

Edit:
The Sociologist wrote:So is it "not as bad as I think" or "a terrible, chaotic mess"...which?

Both. Terrible, chaotic messes aren't as bad as you (seem to) think.
