I'm not sure why you object, as with the current implementation, you can completely ignore it and play as you used to :) ...

Maybe a misunderstanding on my part. I suppose it's okay! :)

It seems to me that you need it, but it would be incredibly strange. Really incredibly strange...

Without it, though, this feature isn't likely to ever be used for anything much. (except naming the new lands you mentioned)

Can't be worse than the sudden disappearance of raw iron, can it? In terms of disruption?

Edit: no rush on that, though...

I'm thinking it would be worth it to give the world amnesia once again.

Would make it really cool for empires and whatnot.

And I'd like to spawn in a town and have to ask; "Huh, where am I?"

I think the way it works is you only recognize buildings in a place you've seen? Or possibly just the place you're in. I haven't traveled since the new system started.

I really don't see the point of it, the way it's implemented now. If everyone knows what everything is originally by default, then it's kinda pointless.

I'd prefer if when you enter a town you haven't been to, you don't know what any of the buildings are called, etc.

Maybe you should do the same thing to animals.

No, Richard, it has nothing to do with your current location ... old location/building/vehicle names have not been removed. The only thing that changed is the colour ;) and the fact that you can now change the name if you so wish to. I know it's not a major thing, but it is for the new lands department ;) ...

I don't understand that at all. Could you paraphrase that?

I would have thought it was obvious. In real life buildings occupy positions in space have signs that say things like "Joe's Diner." Joe, however, doesn't usually walk around carrying a big sign saying "I am Joe" (or at least not unless he is in the military or something, in which case he wears a name tag). Hence dynamic naming works for people. Furthermore, even in Cantr buildings don't have the opportunity to say to you "Hello, I am Joe's Diner".

Oh boy.

WARNING!

This will become catastrophically confusing very quickly. My suggestion is don't use it!

There is another factor which I once was about to take up--before the "tiredness" and "skills" systems knocked the wind out of my sails--and that is a proposed way of giving us the ability to distinguish between town geography and names.

For example, there is a house at 1 Main St. It is currently called "Betty's Clothing Shop" Yes, now you can experiment with changing the name dynamically or by way of signs. But objectively, the building always remains at 1 Main St. This would be great as it would permit registration of titles and the beginning of a legal system.

Now I suspect that building names will continue to be sorted on the building page in the order of their original naming, so you will have people saying things like "It's the fourth building from the top". Just great for roleplay, eh? This usage, "fourth building from the top" is all that will remain of town geography. Not very pretty.

In other words, what Jos & Co. have forgotten is that there are objective elements to town geography. They seem to be trying to render everything subjective and that simply isn't the case. Geography has objective components. Even a Sociologist will admit that!

That's why I don't recommend anyone use it. Chaos will develop very very quickly.

Finally, it really would be nice if there was a test server, so I don't get alpha-test stuff like:

At least this allows characters to remember what some repurposed buildings are for, instead of having to remember that City Hall is actually home to a smelter and other machinery.

Though I can imagine the comedy of the locals telling somebody to go to Fred's General Store, which appears to them to be "Palace of the Sock Monkeys". :)

Sociologist, from your post it seems that you are not aware of the fact you can point to buildings.

man 1 says: "Where can I buy clothes?"
man 2 says: "Why, at 'Jo's Clothes', of course!"
man 2 points to a building

I don't see anything wrong with that.

I'd really like to see this FULLY implemented. An amnesia, if you will. It was annoying when it was implemented for people names too, but I'm sure noone regrets it.

Yes, but there should be some way of knowing a building's name without having to ask - signs - in reality, you ask someone's name if you don;t know it, but you know a McDonald's is an (evil) McDonald's...

I think an extra button should be added to the building and vehicle list, like the smiley face by character names - that gives a description (i.e: a sign) That doesn't change, even if you change what you know the name of the building by - this could be chosen when starting a building, and use the existing names when adding to existing buildings...

Well obviously, I'd think that building signs will be implemented if this is implemented fully.
