Many ancient religions were based on drug induced hallucinations, even pre-greek one civilization in particular had many spiritual experiences from the use of narcotic substances.

opium came from china, I think. Either that or the British introduced it there from India to get the Chinese all hooked.

And Holmes did cocaine, not pot.

did a little research. opium's been around since 3400 bce in mesopotamia. then used in egypt. it was brought to india by alexander the great. opium was reintroduced in europe around 1600. 1700 the dutch first ship opium to china. the chinese try to ban opium over the next century. 1841, opium war between england and china for the right to import it. 1856: second opium war.
