I was bummed when I couldn't use my shovel as a weapon. But a screwdriver worked just fine. Confusing.
And I know it has been discussed before, but I think we really need to think about implementing guns. It's just unrealistic and unreasonable to have cars but not have guns. We don't have to have machine guns or anything, but the technology is at least ready for muskets or rifles, and pistols. They don't have to be too wicked powerful, but I think it would be the next logical development in the Cantr arsenal. Even if they are the most powerful weapon in the game, balance could be maintained by requiring ammuntion. Having to burn a bullet (5 to 10g of iron) with each shot might make people think twice before firing at will.

Screw you hippy. I wanna Gloch.
Other than the incredible social taboo they seem to have now, what are the downsides to impementing it? I am honestly trying to think of problems, but I can't seem to think of any.

well... i don't think they're needed.
Someone who has a good skill with weapons and has a crossbow, can do over 75% damage... I'm pretty sure. And as guns are much more powerful than crossbows (I think), they would probably be a one hit kill... unless that's not a bad thing.

They wouldn't have to be, but they'd certainly be pretty close.
Also...to be at all fair they'd need to consume ammo, which there is no current way for them to do, so coding would be needed.
And, to make things better still, 2 of the three ingreedients of gunpowder don't exist anywhere in the game, as far as I know. Which might well mean that you could only find them on new islands...

Like Nixit suggested, if your character was really good with weapons, then yes they could ideally be one hit to kill, but I don't think they would have to be. Even realistically you don't have a 100% chance of dying from a .22 without a crtical hit. I don't know much numerically about current damage capabilities, but the range on a pistol could be considered roughly equal to a bow or crossbow, while rifles and shotguns would be worth more. It should still take a considerable amount of luck or skill to kill someone with one shot to help game balance, but it would still need to be significant enough to be noticeable. Would 25% to 75% average range sound reasonable, with some sort of rare chance mechanism for a 100% critical hit involved?
As for coding the ammuntion, would it be that complicated to treat it kind of like a project? You could click on the bullets in your inventory to apply them to loading the gun, the the gun would be ready to attck with. The ammuntion would be the most important thing towards maintaining game balance.
As for gunpowder, it would be nice to take it to that level of detail, and that would help even more for balance, but I don't think it would be necessary. Cars run without gas right now, and we don't need matches to start a fire, so as of now combustion reactions seem to involve a different set of physics.

I don't want guns, unless the current weapons impact is lowered so that guns will have a reasonably low impact as well. I don't think it would be fair to have the ability to run around and shoot a town and kill it. A newspawn...gets a hold of agun because an official in a town dies....and he kills three towns then starves to death. Imagine..
And to add to that, guns and someone killing a town with a single gun could be reasonable--But I can picture a group of people obtaining guns and killing towns because they could. Not really for a good reason. They meaning players rather than the characters.

I wouldn't like to see guns implemented, until weapons damage is changed.
I'd like to see it more like real life, where different wounds have different effects on you and your performance.
"Man, don't punch me again, I just lost 4% productivity"
Doesn't sound too realistic.
A gun could kill someone in one hit, potentially. But then again, if you were hit in the throat with a pickaxe, it should be able to kill you in one hit as well. And if you had your arm cut off, it should affect your character. I know this would be hard/impossible to implement, but I'd like to see a more complex health/damage system in the future.
