The Golden Age of Seafaring

Postby west » Fri Apr 15, 2005 5:46 pm

I posted this topic before, but due to some sort of bug on my part it never made it. Here it is again.

Lately it seems that a golden age of seafaring has begun in cantr. Without going into too many details, fairly regular contact has started up between points on the two oldest (I mean longest-inhabited) english speaking islands. I don't know what's happening on Dhung island but maps from there have been showing up on Blojt/Pok/Krif island for decades.

Also, contact is beginning to increase between other english speaking islands (again, without going into too many details).

I foresee a rapidly interconnecting world. At the very least, two sets of interconnected landmasses...

I have no experience with other language groups (although I noticed spanish and german people together when I had a german char) but the English world, at least, is getting smaller.

Discuss. Without going into too many specifics please

Yay! New resources. Maybe someday we'll get those elusive herbs and whatnot to mix medicines. And make tea and coffee. And maybe there's an island with a booze tree so people can finally get drunk.

*sings* It's a whole new woooooooooooorld!!!!

Intercontinental trade should prove interesting...for one thing, you can now run from your past and be pretty sure it'll never catch up, assuming you can find someone to take you overseas.

I won't say we have a golden age until a naval war is fought. Or at least a decent skirmish. I wonder what the favored warship will turn out to be?

Until we can have attacking between/among boats, there won't be a naval war, just a series of coastal raids at most.

what about raiding style boarding actions? Isn't that possible, or more acurrately if I understand correctly, effectively attaching a fortress to a ship and attacking until you win

This is why cannons need to be introduced... so we can get some real naval warfare going... and maybe give a suitable advantage to big ships which could carry more...

I agree with your sentiment, West.

Things are really opening up, in my opinion. Especially from my first hand experience. For example, 6/8 characters of mine have a boat's key in their inventory. One is an adventurer, another is a world reknown trader/captain/encyclopedaeist, etc.

Fun stuff.

If you're a good Captain, and know how the seas work, there's a neat way around that.

Anyways, my characters (one above them all) stakes their place in this world of global intercontinental sea movement.

And he found new land.
He wen't a back about "random number" year(s) ago.

Yes, very good, but no more specifics please. I know actually quite a bit about travel between the islands in that location, but I don't think it should become something talked about on the forum. Let nature take its own course with that.

Thus, no specifics.

It's also the secret of evading pirates ;)

Unless they're lucky, or have common sense. :P

Ah, cannons, now that would be fun! I can see it now, firing the most hated criminals at pirates, blasting them out of the sea. *laughs evilly*
