Movies

Postby rklenseth » Fri Apr 08, 2005 5:17 am

I would like to hear about what people think about movies so lets discuss what movies we have seen recently, whether good or bad.

First I will start off with the good....

Finding Neverland - Johnny Depp is great in this movie about the man who wrote Peter Pan and created the mythical world of Neverland. Now this movies doesn't have any action in it and is more about the characters and their struggles. It has both a sad ending and one of hope.

Warriors of Earth and Heaven - Chinese import about a Chinese Lieutenant accused of treason for not killing innocent people, a Japanese ambassador working for the Chinese emperor to hunt down and kill the Chinese Lieutenant, a young buddhist monk guarding a secret that can give both life and death, a Turkish Warlord who will do anything to get his hands on this secret, and a surprising character (a young woman which is all that I will give) whom I won't give away. The movie has a lot of action but also gives us a lot of depth into the characters.

Now the bad....

Ladder 49 - I thought I would like this movie but it was terrible. Now the acting was fine but the writing and the linear of the storyline (or lack of) is terrible. Plus, I watched this movie with a firefighter who tended to point out everything wrong with the movie like when the main characters falls like 50 feet onto his oxygen tank which should have exploded but doesn't and comes out of it with a few broken bones and is still able to move enough to crawl around. Don't worry, that doesn't give away anything since that little scene there happens in the beginning of the movie.

Movies I would like to see....

Sin City

Im still very stuck on how good of a movie Troy was. (Well it got poor reviews, but I can't see why. I think ebert and roper need laid and are just jealous of how many women like Brad Pitt.) I honestly thought the acting was good. But who am I. :P

Ned Kelly I also really liked.

Well and most recently we've bought Mulan 2 and SarkTales. I like the Mulan movies and SharkTales wasn't half bad either, but I'd prefer Finding Nemo over SharkTales any day.

I would like to see Finding Neverland.

I didn't really like Troy. It wasn't that bad but it wasn't good either. I can hardly remember it even though it wasn't that longe since i saw it...

A movie that I saw recently and that i do like is Oldboy. It's a Korean move about a guy (Dae-su Oh) who's kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years without knowing why. When he finally gets out he goes on a quest to learn the truth and to get revenge.
Maybe it doesn't sound too good but trust me it is :) It's really intense and the plot will keep you on the edge of you seat and Min-sik Choi is great as Dae-su Oh.
So if you havn't seen it already - do it!

I'm also eagerly awaiting Sin City, I hope it can live up to my expectations

I'm kind of stuck in old movie mode recently. New ones just don't seem to be catching my eye really. I've added a few DVDs to the collection recently though.

The Incredibles - Pixar's greatest creation to date. It makes me cry laughing every time I see it.

Office Space - I don't know what took me so long to get a copy. I can relate to it really well now because the only thing that keeps me from working in a cubicle is that there are no walls around my desk.

So I Married An Axe Murderer - Once again, don't know why it took me so long to get this one. This is my absolute favorite Mike Myers film because he really flexes the comic timing in it instead of just going over the top. Every time I see Shrek I'm hearing, "Head! Pants! Now!"
"Y-O-U! It's just two extra letters! Come on, people! This is the internet, not a barn!" --Kid President

Playing a MacGregor convinced me to unhatch Braveheart (okay, it's not recent), which speaks for itself.

Oh right, Serenity's coming out eventually.

I haven't watched Firefly since Richard first got me into it...must have been over a year ago. Maybe I'll watch it again. I remember it being pretty damn awesome, but maybe I'm just foolin' myself.

There are a few movies i want to see right now.

The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy
Sin City
Serenity

One movie someone else mentioned on the forums somewhere, about the crusade.

Ladder 49 - I thought it was a good movie, it wasnt the greatest movie but i liked it. The story was a good one, but it could have been improved.

Finding Neverland - This movie was really good like Rkl was aying, Johnny Depp is great in this role, although i am a big fan of his and think every single movie of his, the ones i have seen at least are wonderful. This movie was exactly as i had expected it to be.

Radio - Cuba Gooding Jr. i think this is one of his best roles, based on a true story about a disabled man ina small country town and how he became the towns mascot practically.

Bad movies...

The Life Aquatic - I cant defiine why i think this is a bad movie, it just sucked. One where i had expected alot out of and got very little.

I forgot to mention Serenity.

Anyways, Kingdom of Heaven looks good but I hope Orlando Bloom can pull it off. The movies I have see him in besides LOTR he was either a terrible or sub par actor. Troy was just plain horrible. The TV movies out the year before were just as good minus the big celebs and Hollywood FX and budget. I think the one was Helen of Troy and the other went by the same name as the Hollywood version. Back to Kingdom; with one my favorite actors, Liam Neeson, and from the theatrical trailer I have seen it looks very good.

Batman Begins looks really good as well. Which also seems to have Liam Neeson in it.

The one movie that I have to see because everyone that has seen it has told me that it is great is Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby.
