Which is why killing prisoners is the best option. Trust no one. People never change in this game. Perhaps in real life, but not here. Once a lying cheat, always a lying cheat. They get out of jail, they will hold a grudge and rob you blind. Kill all criminals, all the time. A reformed criminal is meely a live person that will screw you later. Debate me all you want, but I have never met a rehabilitated person in Cantr in my years hee. There is no remorse, there is no changing of heart, there is no seeing the customs of the region, there is only ignorance and a lack of will to live.

I completely disagree. I've seen two rehabilitated criminals, and they're both very successful upstanding citizens now. :)
It's a matter of the people locking the criminals up, having the know how to convince the criminals to change and have a will to live. And of course along with what West says below.

Edit: Actually make that four or five. Im fairly sure it's about that number. (Though I must admitt we're at a dryspell for chars who will even consider to become rehabilitated. God they're all such little baddies! *grumbles.*)

Sometimes it's not worth the time or effort.

Depends whether you're actually playing your char as a human being with strong self-preservation instincts, or if you're playing with the "oh well, i can always spawn another" approach.

I'm getting rather sick of people who decide to make bone knives and start trying to kill the other prisoners. It's the absolute limit in stupid...There's no profit in it, and it doesn't do you good with the people running the prison either.

Unless of course the player is just trying to get us to clear out their character slot so they can reincarnate and go bother someone else.

In truth, I don't blame you, as much as I hate being executed.

That's a big problem with the game. People just say, "Oh, well, I can just come back to life."

Real people can't come back to life, and live there life keeping that in mind!

That's why I only make on character at a time. So that I will care.

I care about ALL my chars.

I mean, the ones I didn't kill a few cantr years ago because I didn't care about them any more.

Profit in the sense of getting to die clutching someone elses property as well as your own? Or has there actually been an occasion where someone was killed in jail by another prisoner, and then the killer was released?

Deputy Ranger Green. He was framed for murder or something, I don't even fully understand what I was convicted of. In prison is where his murdering career started. When it was found out that he indeed was "innocent", he was released.

No. They just let their prisoners rot without any care at all. :?

Mostly being jailed in Cantr means a slow death sentence. Nothing ever processes, no one remembers. For example, I've been witnessing this knocking in Brunoi for several days. The guy inside the prison has dragged some notes, I didn't notice who picked them up but surely no one has entered the prison, even though the sheriff is awake almost daily. (Or is Alex the sheriff? I was in that thought that he is.)

One of the notes I saw said that the prisoner had dropped all the things he took 5 to 10 days ago and begs to be released. But would anyone even care to check? - No. Probably it is/was some newspawn, with not much food if all. (And yes, I read this note in OOC interest since my local character is illiterate. I do not let the writings affect my character's behaviour but he is slowly turning curious conserning the repeated knocking, since he never saw who was dragged inside and for what.)

Also in Siom I saw a note getting dragged from the prison, I thought it might be Mouse but it was some newspawn thief, pretty much the same situation as in the Brunoi case. Claims to have dropped the things, had thought they were abbandoned. In cases like this it's probably a newbie who doesn't know how Cantr functions. And how long do you think a newbie will stay interested in a game where all they can do is drag notes and watch the daily "You are hungry" messages roll by?

Another, older case is Erroneously Bold locked up in Brunoi over saying that old people deserved to die and young people should have their things. He never assaulted anyone physically as far as I can remember, but was dragged in jail over insulting the elders and killed after a very long time.

Sometimes I wonder do my loud-mouthed characters get an easy way out just because they are mine. OOC-knowledge should not affect the actions ingame but Gahak has said many things which would mean an instant death sentence to any newspawn, but maybe because he's now middle-aged and well-equipped, no one dares to touch him. He has never had a weapon better than a bone spear, not much of a threat to people with iron shields, yet no one has ever attacked him over the things he's said. He's been jailed once and another time forced to apologize and right after he chose to leave to save his face. He even asked those people to attack him, when one of them had told him to apologize or be "taught a lesson". He said he would rather take the lesson, but looks like Stone Knights are all bark, no bite. You would think that anyone would love to take a chance hitting a rude man who's dropped his weapon and promised not to hit back, but no. You know what happened finally? Some newspawn stole his weapon, if I remember right, even hit some people and ran away.

Another one of my characters has grown bitter with age and lately used rather outrageous language, insulting several people but got away with it. Maybe because what he said was based on truth, as it often is, I rarely lie and it's the same with most of my characters.

That would be true, but they haven't been forgotten, it just seems like everyone is just too lazy to let the guy out. In fact, they continue to come in and feed us. There are several people who picked up "junk" off the ground and were thrown in to jail to rot.

We've been RP'ing in the jail as much as possible.

Wow, I just read through this thread and I never realized the situation was so bad. I've had a couple of chars arrested before, and I've arrested a few people, but I've never seen a situation where anyone was left inside to 'rot'. Most of the criminals I see are killed on the road because they won't turn around, and the ones who actually care about there characters usually wind up working for awhile or just giving the stuff back and apologizing.

I'd thin kthere was something really wrong with a guard or leader that takes the trouble to drag someone inside but is too lazy or sleepy to do anything else, but I guess that would also be a lot of other people's fault too for letting them do that.

I think jail can sometimes be a good thing for develpoment of charri's, for example of of mine was wrongly accused and then thrown in jail for 2 years, and he went from being a happy helpful person to a bitter hateful one :D

I agree with the character development part. One of my characters was getting kind of boring to play and events unfolded. Now he's in prison and looking forward to someday getting out has created a new reason to live.
