FAQ Implementation

Postby Rob Maule » Tue Jul 15, 2003 5:28 pm

Where to put the FAQ? How to use it? There are a couple of options that I can think of.

It could be written up and placed on the official Cantr site. You'd see a list of common questions and click the one you want, where it would send you to it's answer.

It could also be placed on this forum under the Announcements category. An admin could edit the post as necessary.

Another option I can think of is to make a walkthrough built into the game. When a character is created, they first have the choice to use the walkthough or just get spawned. Something like this can be found in many other games. It's just to familiarize the player to the interface. Nothing beats first-hand experience. It would show players what the different buttons and links are, how they work, etc. For in-character purposes, it could be a dream before being spawned, or just not be explained at all.

I don't think a walkthrough is a good idea, but I do think a list of maybe not so much common questions, but step-by-step instructions in how to perform basic tasks within the game, like making tools, and collecting resources.

Perhaps some questions or hints could be included as well, but I can't think of any examples off the top of my head.

I don't think anything that relates to actual gameplay should be included (eg. "Don't pick lots of things of the gund and run away as many places will kill you for it") but things about how to play the game should (eg. "to pick up a note click on the "ground" button below the character information.....etc")

A walkthrough would take some of the initial aspects of being born away. Just like in the real world, you're born with no clue as to what's going on, and you have to adapt and figure it out as time goes on. Learning how to master the interface, etc., is part of "life".

interesting view, you mean learning that pressing "that button" hits someone is akin to the real life version of learning that hitting people is not acceptable?

Maybe off topic but....

The avaialabitly of a "Dreamland" location that's not conntected to the rest of the game. We could all log in and help new players and be very OOC about it there. There could be ad hoc far notes too....

If you die in "Deramland" your not as attached to the chracter so testing the hit button would be OK.

The ability to choose "Deramland" or "Cantr" as a starting location like "Male", "Female".

If a separate area for testing buttons and such isn't a good idea, what about a short video that had someone clicking around and showing everything that happens? New players could watch the video and get up to speed.

I think a dream land kind of thing for new players would be good, but perhaps every so often it would be reset to stop players playing in that instead of the real thing. So limited materials etc would be on the cards, enough so they learn how to do things, but not enough to replace the real game.

There should definitely be something that gives a short explanation as to the function of the buttons somewhere, When I started, i had no idea what all the strangfe little symbols were, and had to get another browser (IE..Grrrrrr  ) just so i could see the rollover text...Fortunately there was somebody willing to educate me in that respect, you know who you are.. :D But my first char was still a very confusing experience.

Isn't that the same with your own life? The first time you live is very confusing. Your first girlfriend is very confusing, etc. The second time, is better, etc. And after some time you notice that you get addicted to life, girls, etc. ;-) Something hard to get is most of the time something you want to keep the rest of your life.

Hehe... I get that occasionally from old topics.

Hotmail filters them into my junk mail filter though, so I don't really care.

The strange thing is, I read this the other day when I decided to look through old topics...

Incidentally, where did they decide to put the FAQ? In general support?

I have no idea what happened to the FAQ, although there might be an old one on the main site, or that may just be a get started guide

Anthony handled it. It's on one of the topics and is linked offsite, I believe.

Junesun also stated she was uploading the FAQ on the Cantr website. That was awhile ago, though =\
