Anime emotes in Cantr
*blink*
::sweatdrop::
Ok, sometimes anime is nice but... sometimes it irks me to see such actions in Cantr. It makes me imagine characters as cartoon characters while I'd wish they look as humans, real, physical, 3-D, multicolor humans. o.o;;;; I wouldn't want to seem racistic or anything, I like some Japanimation, especially the Miyazaki's quality stuff. But mostly anime drawing style only reminds me of young girls trying to copy their idols over and over again in crappy graphics. (Surf around Elfwood for a while and you'll notice what I'm talking about.)
Am I just weird or is anyone else bothered by this thing?

Now that annoys me. How can I possibly know that that is what someone is thinking if they don't say it? You shouldn't put too much into the old ** comments.

Right with you there Surly, I keep my emotes to nonverbal communication, but leave the decoding up to the reader

I have a mute character (who doesn't?) and emotes and notes are his only form of communication. Trying to remember not to say "*mimes being unable to talk*" is really, really hard sometimes, but well worth it.
I actually have three characters who communicate more non-verbally than verbally. And then I have a lot of very chatty ones.

I don't see anything wrong with *blinks* or *blinks in surprise* or anything like that, as it's a physical action that normal people do and not so much related to anime, but if I saw someone do the *sweatdrop* thing it would probably irritate the hell out of me.
And while I haven't seen any extreme versions of it in Cantr, from other RP games I know I'm not too fond of being able to 'mind-read' other characters either, because I just think it's much more realistic and interesting to have my character try to figure out their thoughts from their actions, rather than just having everything told to them.

I'll confess I fall on the emote thing quite a bit and agree that the thought behind the expression needs to be interpreted. I do feel that well played nonverbal expression is superior to simple dialogue in a lot of situations - the mian advantage I feel film has over radio. If you know what you're doing, a lot can be conveyed in a look.

It's a bit weird to relate these emotes to anime.
Although you have the (horrible) DragonballZ which is only filled with hours of grunting and blinking and whatever, I don't see why you should relate the two in this manner.

I use *actions* all the time. Some of my characters couldn't live without them, for example one of my chars has a very very limited vocabulary, and only learns new words if the word and item are blatantly put together in front of him. He's finally getting somewhere near understandable, but without the *actions* he'd be impossible!
I don't know how they relate to anime.

Oh not all actions relate to anime! But if they make the impression that when you imagine the character in your head, you see a cartoon character rather than a real flesh and blood human being - that's what annoys me. Sorry I can't remember another ingame example than the sweatdrops.
By the way what is it with this putting your hand on the back of your head when you're abashed? Do Japanese people do that in real life too or just the cartoon characters? Since I've never noticed such gesture in Western culture and I wonder where it's coming from.
And when a person just blinks when they don't understand you, instead of perhaps saying "Excuse me? Err... could you repeat that", it makes me feel like my character is all stupid and they don't even wanna understand what they were saying.
