Knock out?
So, how about a knock-out option, so you could subdue someone (KO),then take their stuff?
Yeah,I realize that it'll be used by thieves, but right now, there are two things you can do to a thief-- lock them up in a room to starve to death, or kill them by hitting them repeatedly. Not everyone thinks death should be the only solution to a crime problem. If an armed citizenry could knock a thief out and take their stuff.... at least it would give more optIons.

I always thought that if you were excessively injured you should automatically drop things.
This might keep people from running, too. If they were injured on the road half there stuff would drop and end back in the town that they were in originally. Also, the things they stole...and more...might drop to the ground and they wouldn't have to be killed.

I think I've seen something like this suggested before, but just in the sense of making people easier to drag and unable to fight back or run away. That said, I really like the idea of being able to take a person's stuff. Maybe some kind of "mugging" project?
(It would even be difficult for thieves to abuse something like that, because realistically if someone tried it in the middle of town they'd be stopped and arrested themselves...)
Right now if someone steals something (or has something you want) the only way to get it is to convince them to give it to you or pry it out of their cold dead hands. Not very realistic, and it's especially annoying if they're asleep or just refusing to answer, and the latter becomes your only option. (And in a case where for whatever reason violence isn't an option it's even worse, because you're forced to wait forever until starvation or the sleeping sickness takes care of the problem for you.)

Well... yes. It's a lame tradition, born out of a game mechanic. There's no good alternative, so Cantr is disgustingly uniform. Every town has the same cultural rules, some written, many unwritten, but most of them revolve around the fact that you can't see if someone is carrying 5000 g of iron out of the building they just entered, and you can't take it away from them without killing them.

Yes but you can still prove how much they're carrying, if you think they've stolen 4000g worth of stuff, try passing them 14000g worth of sand or something else. I know this isn't exactly practical but there are ways of finding out without killing them.
Back on topic, there should be certain weapons that have this ability and it could be treated much like breaking a lock, but the result is instantaneous. E.g a Billy Club. Damage is say 10 avg with a 1 in 5 chance of knocking the opponent out??
It's a tricky one...

There ought to be some way to overpower someone by sheer weight of numbers, whether you have the right sort of weapon or not- especially if they're asleep.
Another thing- is it possible to drag someone off a locked bike? It should be, but somehow I suspect that it isn't. Also, there should be some way to prevent a vehicle from moving.

Gatehouses!! "Welcome to Fortress Wherever. Please knock and state you name..."
In a way you can.
Simply comstruct a building named "Gatehouse" in which all other buildings are built. Sloppy, but it would do the job.
Obviously it won't stop people from bypassing it, or building there, or collecting resources, so, um, it is kind of pointless to do.
