Actually, the reed would be made out of.... reed. Which is an available resource in Cantr, from what I hear.
Missy, I disagree with the idea that they should have no effect. Theoretically, when weather gets implemented, we will all be grateful for our clothes (well, you all will be-- so far, all any of my characters own is a loin cloth, and they're all just going to freeze to death). What would be the purpose in gathering the resources and building a musical instrument to make something that only makes you tired and does absolutely nothing else except break? Do you really think anyone in their right mind would bother? Do you think people will actually appreciate it, or just consider it background noise?
Music should *do* something. It could increase the healing effectiveness for anyone in hearing (hey, it could produce non-food healing-- that would make it very valuable!) It could soothe savage beasts, lowering the % chance that a boar or tiger or bunny rabbit will attack by a significant amount in any day in which a "play music" project is happening. It could increase the effect of drunkenness, when drunkenness is implemented. A war harp/bagpipe/drum could increase fighting effectiveness.
If musical instruments do nothing at all, then I don't want them, because I can *pose* that I'm beating two sticks together or blowing across a reed flute if I really want that for RP reasons.

1111:1 You see a man in his thirties kill a man in his twenties with an electric guitar.
1111:1 You see a woman in her twenties give a fur bikini to a man in his thirties.
1111:1 You see a man in his thirties give a backstage pass to a woman in her twenties.
1111:1 You see a woman in her twenties being dragged to Rockin' Room Backstage
(Later)
1199:9 You see a man in his fourties die from a coke habit
1222:2 You see a man in his fourties on VH1's Behind the Music
COME ON! DO IT! Let's start making this game realistic or something.

music having prgrammed effec on productivity? that's like damnding that reading in game literature give people a +7 bonus to intellegence based skills.
so yea, i'd be against that. in fact i'd say that music has no place in cantr at all, since it's so abstract from their world, which has no sound. adding music would just be unnecessarily imposing an element of ooc life to cantr where it doesn't really fit. it would be like adding toothpaste as a harvestable resource.
songs are ok, since they can still be poetic and are enjoyable without actual melody.

Well, there are also clothes whereas there is no light so noone can see who's naked or not....
Oh wait! There must be light in Cantr! After all, you can see people dying and leaving and hunting etcetera....
Hey! There must be sound too! After all we can hear each other talking and we can hear someone knocking on the door!!!
Well, there goes your logic....
Besides, even in the OOC-world toothpaste doesn't grow on trees. There goes another "argument".
I don't know how much use instruments should have in the Cantrian world. At least it could be fun for a few role-players. Implementing music instruments is not a high priority thingy, but it would be nice to have them in Cantr.

certainly toothpaste wouldn't grow on trees. you would mine it, duh!
but in all seriousness, of course all elements of cantr are imposed from real life, but mostly they're ones that work well within the frame work of the game. there are some rough edges, but that can't be avoided. music on the other hand, fills no gap in the game that i can see. it's so removed from everything that is currently in the game, hence the toothpaste reference.
and cantrians talk through sound? that's news to me.

common kroner - have you never RPd one of your characters something like 'I heard' or something?
we know physics in Cantr isn't quite real - but it's not meant ot be totally fantastical - it's not a large leap to think that there must be sound in Cantr of some kind - and anyway - if there isn;t - who's to say we can't RP that there is - same with the sky, the sea, light etc. - never actually explicitly mentioned - not as part of the Cantr world - but there's no problem with RPing it
Which is why I say we don;t really need to have ijnstruments as objects - can't you just use your imagination and initiative to RP them - two sticks - or something?

the part that matters is that music is so abstract from anything that currently exists in cantr and i can't think of any reason it would help the game to add it.
fine, maybe there are sounds, but that's still very far off from the capacity for music. additionally, if "music" were added to cantr formally, it would not actually be music, unless we had the game playing sounds which is not coming anytime soon. while literature and art in cantr is really literature and art, music would be completely pretend and so it might as well be left to rp as it is now.

That's the point, you can, but if you don't have them, then you get people whining that there's no such thing, so why not implement them beforehand?

I wasn't ganging up on the guy - but to claim that there's no sound in Cantr did seem a little extreme...
and I'd also disagree that music is an abstract notion to Cantrians - many people play poets, or singers - so the concepts of rhyme and rythm must exists - and they're probably the basics of music...
But I'd agree that musical instruments, if introduced, shouldn't have any affect - and should be purely aesthetical - and, anyway, furniture items, and even broms, are often used in Cantr RP - why couldn;t musical instruments be used similarly?
